You could get rid of everything and get a Q3 43.  It’s a kind of Swiss Army knife camera.  If you don’t really need long or wide it’s brilliant! I rarely use my m10-R these days, much as I love(d) M lenses and photography…

I have quite a few cameras in my cupboard, but when I analyze what I use, the SL2S is my daily companion, albeit with its lightest universal lens, the Sigma 28-70. I find it a comfortable carry, either directly on my side and diagonal strap, or in the smallest LowePro bum bag. When I am out for serious shooting the larger LowePro bumbag will take the Sigma 70-200 additionally. Still a comfortable carry and a powerful and versatile set. Often both are joined by the Summilux 24 M for. indoors. For special days I take the M9M with a variety of lenses. The rest, including the M9 are relegated to inactivity. Sadly the CL and its lenses are in the “if I ever need a capable small and light set” category. For my excursions into Africa it is a different story…
I just mean to say that if one chooses one’s sets carefully the SL2S is a fantastic go-anywhere and do-anything camera that, with the right lenses, can be a perfect companion. Even for an oldie with arthritic knees like me.

In a sudden change of plans, I sold the SL2-S!

Instead of spending the proceeds on another camera, I'm going to take my family on a short vacation. God knows I need one!

I'll take some great pictures of our trip with my M10-R. And bring my little GR IIIx as a backup.

I'm astonished beyond measure - that there is someone on this forum who actually lives in a real world, and has a life!

What is this "real world" and "life" of which you speak?

FORGIVE my ramblings - in my truck between claims - typing away in an effort to give thoughts.

First - I shoot mostly manual - have an SL and even a Panasonic S1 - both have stellar EVFs (must have for manual focus) - but I will tell you that I also have (and love) a TL2 with the visoflex typ 020 - and am very happy with it - even for the touchiest of manual focus lenses and its limited (sensor) zoom.   Therefore - get the Visoflex (I think it works on the m10) and shoot tele that way.  I do not know how it zooms in on an M, but on my TL2 it gives 6x which is enough for me to nail the eye.

Second - if you want good image quality and weather sealing - and compact - you are very limited.  Q2/3, Fuji 100v or vi or vii.  Not much else out there - perhaps a7c but now you are into a different system.  If you are not snapping shots in a downpour - you can likely get away with carefully handling the camera.  I'm an insurance adjuster - often in the downpour - I do not trust most - only my Lumix S1 and the plethora of sports cams I have (think Fuji XP series or OM TG series), none of the weatherproof sports cams offer great IQ, and for the s1 - you think your sl2s is heavy and big - HA.  I have had my RX1 in rain with no issue, as also my RX100m3 (no comparison between their IQ, one is 1", one is full frame).  This part is a TALL order until you start spending some real money - and then you need to ask - why?  Although I would suggest the RX1 would fill your journalism needs - its AF is not great.  I've used a Ricoh GRIII before and like it a lot (really small/pocketable), but good luck finding one at a reasonable price.  I bought a Sony RX100m3 for a Disney trip and wished I'd taken my RX1 instead (although still a great compact - there is no comparison in the lens category and subsequent output).  The small (TINY) RX100 series offers an immense amount of usage in a truly pocketable solution - just not weather sealed (thinking your journalistic needs).  Only disclaimer - mine is worth double what I paid as the craze for pocketable larger sensor units is outrageous these days.

Suggestion:  Rid yourself of the SL2S IF you do not use it.  Get the VisoFlex for the longer lenses and your M (as well as the ability to use some non-leica non-M mount).  DO NOT GO CHEAP ON THIS - I've had three, returned two - make sure it's in great condition - and yes, it's ridiculously priced - think I paid 390.  Then, buy a used Fuji XP100 (weatherproof) or the like and GET IN the water with the kids and take photos/videos - the IQ will NOT be to the standard, but often the experience and the photo will be beyond what you get now.  If willing - grab a used RX1 - it may suit your journalistic and out of the water needs - or it may be the gateway drug to a Q3.  Mine has survived at least 25 bodies now, and is still in the rotation (for specific needs).  Add a godox TT350 to it and you can shoot 24/7 with it.  Just remember one rule with the RX1 - manually set the WB to a grey card every time and save yourself a ton of time in post...

FTR: I've kept my SL (returned the SL2S) because of how it handles with vintage (non-leica) lenses and the feel of use.  It's a disease (the acquiring and usage of vintage lenses) - but it suits me (and it's not my only camera).  I will add - once you get used to it - your focus speed (critical, say on the eye) will get quicker - muscle memory thing.  I've got a cannon fl 50/1.2 which is notoriously hard to focus - on the SL I'm one to two seconds with it.  Mileage with it makes a difference.

Joshua, I was in the exact same situation as you for the better part of the last three years after I bought an SL2-S with a 35mm and 24-70 mm lens — against the advice of the Leica store guy who said I should buy a Q instead. Having used Ms for 35+ years, I always thought the SL is way too heavy and big to carry it around all day, and constantly thought about swapping it for an M or Q.

All that changed over the last four weeks (government shutdown and I’m on unexpected weeks-long, unpaid “vacation”) when I decided to always have the SL2-S + 24-70 with me. After just a few days, I completely got used to it and are no longer concerned about weight and size. I carry it cross-body all day, rain or sun, with no bag and no extra battery because one battery gets me through the day. And when I occasionally bang it against something, I don’t even care because the kit can take it. Now I’m in love with it and wouldn’t trade it for anything else! Just give it a chance.

Edit: just saw that you sold it … happy to hear that you are putting family first!

Indeed, I did sell it! But it was easy to do partly because the prices for used SL2-S cameras are so low . . . Replacing it wouldn't be cheap, exactly, but if I start missing it too much I figure I can always buy it back.

It is a beautiful camera, isn't it? Over the past year, I've sold two Leica bodies: my SL2-S and my M10 Monochrom. When I look back through my Lightroom catalog, I can't decide which one I miss most. But I'm really trying to keep it simple.

I'm glad to hear you've found happiness with your setup, and I hope our crazy government shutdown situation gets resolved soon!

I agree wholeheartedly with you. Once I stopped trying to carry my sl2 (and now my SL2S) the way I tend to my smaller cameras (in my hand with a wrist strap) and began to carry it the way I have my older heavier cameras (adjustable strap slung cross body lens down) it's heft becomes much less of an issue. Both the SL2 and Sl2s power up and are ready to take a picture by the time I bring them up to my eye. Such enjoyable cameras to use; the Sl2s with its larger shooting envelope vs the Sl2 all the more so.

My other cameras don't see anywhere near as much activity since I got my SL2S.

or in the smallest LowePro bum bag

What is a bum bag? After Google it seems to be a belly bag, but then it must be a rather huge one.
Do you have a link for your model as i may be interested in onbe.

I have only LowePro bags
1 very small toploader for my Q2 only
1 bigger toploader for the Q2 with strobe and the ElPro52
1 even biggertop loader for the SL2 with the biggest of my lenses, the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 HSM ART attached
1 ProTactic MG160AW II Messenger style camera bag with attached extra pouches for my SL2, and the Sigma lenses 14mm, 28 and 105mm, one of the extra pouches carry my old M2 lenses
Wandred PRVKE 21 V2 Photo backpack

I use the top loaders only to protect the camera if i use a non padded bag or my waterproofed sling bag with a very long zipper to be able to extract the camera without taking the sling bag off.
Sling bag for long walks and messenger bag to bring all to location and usually stay in car and some time for short walks with all my gear.

Sell the setup plus my 50 Lux ASPH (a lens I rarely use, because I have and prefer the 50 f/1.2 reissue) and buy a Q2 as the 'rough and ready' camera. (I've owned a Q2 before and got a lot of value out of it.)

If you are absolutely sure to not miss a camera where you can change lenses then this.
Best would be to just add the Q2 and then see how much you use your "old" setup, if no use anymore the sell it later.
The Q series is a priceless camera for quality, waterproofing and size but the fixed length lens can be a limit, but you know that already.

As i love to shoot ultrawide and macro so finally i added a used, but in new conditions SL2 with new Sigma lenses and could not be happier.
Using the correct way to carry a big camera makes photographers life much more simple, the SL and f.e the Sigma 28mm ART i have fit in a small toploader what you can stuff in any bag your want and need.
All my cameras have finger/hand loop, thumb grip and hand grip and i carry them mostly in my hand, if not they stay in one of the bags i mentioned above and that works for me.

Enjoy your final decision and family holiday!

When you come back and settle in aka pay off the trip, try the SL3-S. You might find the AF system easier to work with than the SL2-S and pair the SL3-S with a SL 35 or 50 ASPH (not SL APO lens) for what I am told is are faster focusing lenses. Your M lenses will also thank you for inviting their big brother back into the family.

SL3-S. Slightly smaller, slightly less weight, better AF and still ALL Leica 😎

Yep, what i guessed, we call them also a Kangaroo bag.
Is it the ProTactic Lite SLX series?
When i am back in Zürich i will visit the store who carries almost all LowePro bags and is my preferred LowePor pusher to see if they fit my already there belly 😆
it could be a new bag to replace my waterproof sling bag what works well but yours would allow faster access.
