Vsisishi68 Posted July 16 Share #1 Posted July 16 Advertisement (gone after registration) Happy owner of a Leica M11-P, I would like to know if it’s possible for my camera to automatically connect to my iPhone upon startup in order to geotag my photos. Having to do it manually every time is quite tedious, and I often forget to do it. Also, in an ideal world, I’d prefer not to drain the battery too much and would like to use the power saving mode. What do you think? Thank you!

elmars Posted July 16 Share #2 Posted July 16 For the M11 to record the geodata, you do not have to connect it every time. The iPhone and M11 do this automatically in the background via low-energy Bluetooth - even if the Leica Photos app has been completely closed (a warning message then appears, but this is incorrect). You only have to initiate a manual connection (via the camera's own Wi-Fi) if you want to transfer full-size images (preview files are also transferred via Bluetooth if this is set).
Vsisishi68 Posted July 20 Author Share #3 Posted July 20 I understand that I need to connect once at the beginning. My question is: do I need to initiate the connection myself (i.e., by launching the app), or is it done automatically? maxpower Posted July 20 Share #4 Posted July 20 Once it's setup correctly it happens automatically in the background, as long as bluetooth is enabled.
bcaslis Posted July 21 Share #5 Posted July 21 You need to add the camera to the Fotos app and set it to synch geotagging data. Once that is done you do not need to manually connect it each time, it will do it automatically.
Jonathan Levin Posted July 27 Share #6 Posted July 27 Did this change recently because if I don’t have LF (latest version) running on IPhone 15 Pro, images are not geo tagged on SL3. I keep it launched when shooting. If I quit the app I get a message that LF has been terminated and I need to open app to geotag.

For geotagging images that you take with the M11 the app can be closed on you cell phone. You just need the iPhone in your pocket. Note that when you close Leica Fotos you get the message that geotagging has stopped now. THIS MESSAGE IS WRONG. JUST IGNORE IT. The only thing that you need to have done is a correct pairing of your camera and phone. Note that this is a great feature. Canon app is not able to behave like that. You need have the app open for geotagging. Leica ist the best 😵💫

However, active does not mean that there must be a WiFi connection to the camera, the app must not be completely closed by swiping upwards.
jgeenen Posted July 28 Share #9 Posted July 28 Another observation on the M11: If you have geo-tagging enabled, it usually takes roughly 10-20 seconds for camera and phone to handshake. If you switch off your camera during that period, your phone might show an error message indicating a wrong setup of the connection and advice to reconfigure the connection. You do not need to follow this advice. It is just a misinterpretation - the phone simply did not realize that the camera had been switched off during handshake.
