Just bought a beautiful CL.

The firmware on the supplied 18mm will not update, it is at 1.0.

When I select “start update” I very shortly see a rotating thingy, and the screen goes back to the initial one.

No messages of any kind.

The 11-23 gives the correct response.

Any ideas?

The camera should initiate any firmware changes needed for a lens, if the firmware for the camera itself is up-to-date. It may be there was no change in firmware for the 18mm during its production life.

The camera should afaik at least acknowledge latest firmware, or ask for the new one on the card.

This works ok for the 11-23, but the 18 just flashes and returns to update screen.

BTW, is there a list with latest lens firmware, or are they all the same version?

Not true for the CL. I have a lot of lenses that weren't updated until I realised I had to ask the camera to do it.

My 18mm is also at 1.0. I think it was brought out later than the other lenses so am assuming that 1.0 is the latest firmware.

Updating makes a real difference for the 60mm. I was having trouble with manual focus, which it fixed.

The TL 18mm followed the TL 23mm and the TL 18-56mm lenses. The 18mm was later offered as part of a kit. My lenses automatically updated when I updated the camera firmware. All my lens firmware is at 2.0. If lens firmware is later than that I would love to see it. Nothing newer than 2.0 on the Leica site.

So all your lenses are firmware 2.0, and they are updated by the camera?

My CL has 4.1, and does not update any of my lenses.

Does it need the update file on the card?

My recollection is that I could update them all to 1.1 from the camera (except for the 18mm) but needed to download the firmware file from Leica to get to 2.0. I have searched through the file and can find the designations of many lenses, but not the 18mm F2.8.

I believe that 4.1 contained the lens firmware updates, so did both at the same time.

And nothing happened....

Have 4.1 and TL firmware on the card, camera does not initiate an update, and manual update says "already installed".

Except 18mm, that one just flashes.

Camera 4.1, 18mm 1.0, 11-23 1.1.

Camera and 11-23mm both state “latest firmware installed”, 18mm just flashes once, no statements.

From your previous post I understand that all TL lenses should be at 2.0, and if not be updated automatically by the camera if the camera is at 4.1.

When will the camera initiate the update?

It won't. You need to copy TLLens02.plf onto the root directory of your camera's flash card. Go to the menu. 5th (last) page. Camera information. Lens firmware version. Select "Start update."

I think that I got the file from Leica. It has lots of text like "PO-MACRO-ELMARIT-TL 1:2.8/60 ASPH" but nothing like "1:2.8/18" so I don't think it's possible to upgrade the 18mm unless perhaps there are multiple versions of the file.

If you search around on the internet you'll find various versions of the file. I can't comment on whether they are all trustworthy.

I think the autofocus was really noticeably better on the 60mm as was the manual focus. I think manual focus is a bit crisper on the 35mm too.  No downsides that I've noted anyhow.

  • 2 months later...

Has anyone had success updating a Elmarit-TL 18mm f/2.8 ASPH from 1.0 to 2.0 via a CL with fw 4.1?

As others mentioned above, I have downloaded https://leica-camera.com/sites/default/files/TLLens02.plf and copied it to the root directory of a freshly formatted SD Card. When I start the update, I get a spinning wheel for about 100ms and the back to the menu.  Just for kicks, I also tried updating the lens on my SL2-S and my backup CL with the exact same results. I have check to make sure that file name is correct (TLLens02.plf) and there is nothing else other than the DCIM and private folders on the SD Card. I am using a Mac?  Any success stories would be much appreciated...

Thanks, Damon

UPDATE:  I stopped by Leica this morning and basically, They did exactly the same thing that I've been doing to no avail. It seems that this update needs to be performed on a TL body. That said, if there's anybody in Manhattan that happens to have a TL body and would like to swing by the studio for some spectacular rooftop views and a beer, I'd be most appreciative. You can text me at 917-774-3128. Media 3 Ltd. https://www.liveshots.com/.

Thanks,

Damon
