Yep, rename on import to something more useful - for me yyyymmdd_job/subject etc. Any program lets you batch rename in a sequence. I’ve never used the camera file names.

PhotoMechanic is the best program though for this - when you shoot a good bit it is indispensable for keeping your c1 or Lr catalogs manageable. Make your edit (as in, choosing selects) first in PM and then just import those into the developing program.

I file all my images in Lightroom folders that begin with the date. That process is automated. Once I’ve downloaded the images I then rename the folder to add the event/place after the date. Within that folder all the images bear the file number from the camera. I don’t shoot enough to justify using Photomechanic.

Take another look at post #6

This is all built into LR. It's trivial to set up import profiles which include file renaming templates that descriptively rename the files upon import. I have them in place for each camera that I use. Along with file renaming, you can also specify develop settings, location the files will be saved, metadata settings, keywords, etc. You can easily modify any of the settings if something needs to be handled differently for a given import.

As I said, pretty much any software does this. Quite simple to rename files upon import into LR as well. I only use PM because it’s much faster to edit a take of photographs than it is in LR, not because of the file naming capability.

If you want to do it your own way that’s great, but some of us are just letting you know why we’ve never cared about the camera’s default file numbers.

I know, I’m agreeing with you! This has helped me understand that my current practice is not going to result in a  problem down the line.
