M9 CCD ID 14

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, but I couldn't find any information on the existing posts: I am considering buying an M9. The owner says that the CCD ID is 14, and that he didn't have to replace it since those sensors didn't have any problem. The thing is, there is no information online for a sensor ID 14. It is either ID 5 (the original), ID11-12 (newer ones that still had the problem) and ID 15-16 (with the problem solved). Does anyone have any info on such a version of the M9 CCD sensor?

Never came across CCD ID 14 when I bought my M9s after a lot of research.
However I do know this that all original M9 are susceptible to corrosion unless replaced.

A very large number have been replaced. Ask the question of the seller. Another avenue would be to contact Leica in Germany. Ask about the the CCD ID14.

The M9 is a great camera and the 'last of' the CCD brigade, which at base ISO is excellent. The shutter noise is greater than the later models but is only an issue if you are trying to be discreet when shooting.

I have had an M9 since it was released. THe sensor has been replaced and it has been perfect ever since.

Welcome to the Forum.

You can find what sensor a camera has through the menu system. Ask seller to bring it up on rear screen and to send you a photo of the screen.

If they do not know how, send this

I have a strong suspicion that ID 14 signifies the replacement with an original sensor but could not find anything online.Just ask Leica Germany mentioning the number of the camera.   I would avoid this camera if you cannot get a clear answer from Leica.  +49(0)6441 2080-0

Call Leica, give them the serial number and they will give you the service history. Done this a few times.

Hi Rafo ,

Never heard of ID 14 sensors .

There are ID 8, 11**, and 12 sensors according to Thorsten that can corrode , and newer ID 15 or 16 sensors that don't corrode.

** I had the original sensor changed by Leica for the first time in 2011 , which was variolated , with an ID11 sensor which is now variolated  again, and I just changed the filter at Kolari in 2025 .

Hello, thank you all for the answers. I will try to contact leica for any information on ID-14, and I will also try to see what the camera ID actually is with the method mentioned above. It is a local seller, so I will be able to have access to the camera myself before buying.

I have been a (very) happy M8 user for quite some time now, and now I want to upgrade to full frame... let's see how that goes.
