Ha, Leica is not alone here. I own a Moto Guzzi motorcycle, roughly 10 years old by now, and needed a rubber nipple which somehow got lost. This rubber nipple is a very simple item, which is used on the bike to isolate a plastic stud from the motorcycle frame. I ordered a replacement rubber nipple at my Guzzi dealer (in Germany), and expected to be charged in the order of 2 or 3 Euros (the item itself is worth some cents). Unfortunately, I was totally wrong. The dealer charged me 11,50 €, and even showed the official Moto Guzzi spare part list to me to prove he did not rip me off. Should I now sell my Moto Guzzi? 🙂

I was daft enough to spend £45 on a '100 Years' brass/silver socket cap. It was beautifully packaged in a little cloth bag in a custom box with a 100 year sleeve.
Eclectic Man Posted June 24 Share #24 Posted June 24 Stanley Gibbons, the postage stamp dealer, lists a price for every stamp, but state that for the ones with the highest number printed, this is merely a handling charge, not an indication of value. I dare say that Leica (and Nikon) handling charges are not zero, and probably more than the production costs of a small piece of plastic. C'est la vie! masjah Posted July 11 Share #25 Posted July 11 Twas ever thus. I regularly lost the PC socket caps on my old R8/R9s, and was charged a very similar amount years ago, so, allowing for inflation, you are in fact getting a bargain. I discovered that my caps were getting flipped off when I removed the camera from its storage bag; simply changing its position in the bag solved the problem immediately, leaving me half a dozen caps that I'd bought in a bulk buy expecting further losses. I passed them on free to fellow sufferers, in return for a modest donation (£1 or so) on their part to the charity of their own choice. I simply regarded it as a Leica owners tax. thua Posted July 15 Share #26 Posted July 15 Lost my cap (SL3) last year. Sent an email to Leica customer Service and even offered to pay. One week later they sent me 2 for free...

Clearly the kind of service that can only be expected from a high end brand. I wonder if the item even has an official list price. One would think that they just came out with a price high enough to not have you come in every week for free/lost caps and low enough to not turn you off too much. Clearly they did not succeed in the latter, but still I would say this is high end service which is unlikely to be seen with any other brand. btw, good to see people are using the sync port, as I thought we’d left those behind years ago and design-wise they’re an eye-sore. They are left behind, because if you use a Leica Visoflex 2 , your port gets obsolete. So I would say with all Noctilux and Summilux Lenses and with a viewfinder attached you don’t need any cap no longer.
