Hi, I bought a Leicaflex black SL recently. I checked the serial number (no. 1386031) on https://www.base2photo.com/Photography/Tips/Database/Leica/SerialNumbers?camerasn=1386031&lenssn= and it says

1975 SL2. On a friend's suggestion, I also went down the list on https://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Serial_Numbers_Leica_Cameras, and the serial number matches with 1975 SL2. But the one I have is clearly a SL1. Is there a problem? Any feedback will be much appreciated.

None of the serial number lists published online is 100% accurate. If you want details about a specific camera/serial number, your best bet is to contact Leica Support in Wetzlar. Most of the time they can even give you a service history record.

Bottom Line: Leitz/Leica's reputation for "precision" was based on their engineering skills, not on their record-keeping skills (which at times amounted to hand-written records in ledgers.)

Especially as translated by amateurish collectors and "list-makers," often years after the fact.

There are a few issues with the online serial numbers according to Leica

  • Some serial numbers have been recycled
  • Online lists are based on assumptions, especially "Serial number X was used for Model ABC, Serial Number X + 5000 was used by Model ABC, so everything in between must be Model ABC, too". This is definitely not the case. Numbers in certain ranges have been definitely used for different camera and lens models.

I've approached Leica a couple of times when I found a camera or lens not lining up with the online serial number lists and the outcome was each time the same. "Yes, the online lists are wrong, according to our records this number belongs to a model XYZ, not ABC"
