But you only need to take a few steps backwards and get even less DOF with a 50mm or a 75mm F/1.4 lens and both are arguably more useful. So isn't the 28mm even more specialist than imagined, useful for very, very confined spaces? I'm only approaching it from practicalities, fast Leica lenses were only developed to deal with low light, and it's only nowadays wondering what else to do with it that leads photographers to find fascination in vast areas of the photograph that is out of focus.

Here comes a small update. Please feel free to comment if you have the same “problems.” Note: I have the 35 APO and really like that rendering. The old “style” also has something special. 🙂

Update: I have now bought and tested the Leica M28 Summilux.

1. First impression after mounting it: It IS big. I will only use it when I KNOW I need it. It blocks (too) much of the viewfinder. But it is what it is. I knew that.

2. I took quite a few test shots. I was sold. It has a very special “drawing” at f/1.4. Even distant shots look fantastic. They have a look I’ve never seen before. BUT after taking a good number of photos, I now see it has a lot of CA – so much that it’s hard to live with. I’m attaching pictures. I know it can be corrected. But highlights against windows will often appear in my shots, as I often take that kind of photo because I find it beautiful. So post-processing would be needed every time. (Some big vignetting too)

3. The photo here is of my lovely disabled daughter walking around our home.

4. So now I’m seriously considering trading it for the new version of the Leica M28 with close focus, or a Leica 50 f/1.4 with close focus, and using my Q3 for 28mm. The price would be about the same. Maybe it’s GAS, but I’d really like to expand my kit with a “new” lens 😊

The Lux28 is known to suffer from CA. I've reviewed my pictures and the only ones in which I could see noticeable CA, though a bit less than what you've experienced, are in a similar context of a subject against a (relatively) strong light source. One way to compensate other than in post, is to underexpose. Most wide angle wide aperture lenses suffer from this phenomenon under similar scenarios.
