So, got my iiif and currently trying the first roll. After loading I set the counter to zero, and the dial is advancing nicely.

However…

I discovered I can turn the dial freely, thus moving the dial away from the indicator pointing to the current frame.

Normal? Feature, or fault? Here it is, btw.

Nice looking cam and good to see you have the 50mm aux finder. Essential in my view. The frame counter should turn freely with clicks in the anticlockwise direction by using the two 'bumps' on the scale, only. This is how you set it. It should not turn clockwise, except when driven by the film winder mechanism.

Edit: Closer exam of your pic makes me suspicious. The screw next to the VF looks wrong. Too big and damaged. There should be another screw below the RH round VF window on the right, as viewed in the pic, and another just above your thumb in the pic.  Are you sure it is a genuine item?

Ah, so I am reading the manual correctly. Thank you.

Well, I can turn the counter in either direction, without real resistance. No click or grinding feeling. And with turning I don’t mean spinning freely like a whirlybird; just turning.

Hmm. Your cam may be a different version from mine. I don't have the self timer mechanism, but the counter definitely only turns anticlockwice with a click for each position. Definitely not clockwise by hand.

Wait awhile. Greater knowledge than mine will tune in with better advice when they check in.

not really, these scerws (2 in front, 2 at the back) were gone at around serial 630xxx, Leica modified the way how the top cover was fixed.

looks like the disc of film counter is damaged, there is a sort of ratchet build into the disc, if you do not hear click means rachet is not working properly, Could be spring inside broken, could be dirt.

... this is how the film counter disc looks, within the brass ring is the ratchet i meant. If you have 2 mm screwdriver and some skills how you may try to rermove and clean the disc in lighter fluid. Removing the wind knob is a bit tricky, I may give you some hints if you decided to do it.

Leave bottom cover and film spool inside the camera. In case you do not see the mud screw in the hole lift and rotate knob by one step and release. Repeat this untril you will see the screw. Losen the screw by 1-1,5 turns max., not more, otherwise parts of the knob will separate and you will have problems in getting it right back. Unscrew the knob. Lift film counter, leave the middle gear inside. Wash the whole dial in loighter fluid, rotate the inner part of the dial when in bath. Let it dry before mounting.

Not sure if this bath will help, could be that ratchet is broken inside. In such case Dial shall be replaced (or left as it is)

Locating the screw to loosen the turning knob couldn’t have been easier.

Almost too easy. It was already visible in the opening for it in between the knurly bits. Mmm…

Anyway - dirt is not the problem. If indeed the inverse cog wheel in the centre of the frame counter is supposed to have a ratcheting function, it ain’t working.

I presume the off-center fit of the take-up spool axis cog wheel into the inverse cog wheel is normal? If so, I could find another - working - film counter ring, or just leave it and use my noggin to track frames, in case I move the counter, as I’m sure I will.
