scloop Posted May 11 Share #1 Posted May 11 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like to shoot landscape shots with SL lenses and manual focus using the distance scale function of the SL3. I set the camera to MF and then half press the shutter release button to engage the distance scale on the top screen. However, with the SL3, as soon as I turn the focus ring on the lens, the distance scale then disappears and the standard top screen is again shown (despite the fact that I continue to half press the shutter release). The only way I can get the distance scale screen to remain on the top screen while manual focusing is to take a picture, then continue to half press the shutter release. When I do that, the distance scale remains on the screen while half pressing and manual focusing the lens. Do others experience the same? My camera and lens firmware is up to date. Advertisement Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Hi scloop, Take a look here SL3-Issue with Manual Focus Using the Distance Scale function. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Photoworks Posted May 11 Share #2 Posted May 11 If I half-press, the distance information stays on as intended.

Yes this has been happening since I purchased the sl3. It’s driving crazy because I’ve grown very accustomed to using it for landscapes. I haven’t run a test yet but I believe it’s not working on my LUMIX lenses but is working properly on my Leica lenses. My SL2-s works fine with all my lenses. scloop Posted May 12 Author Share #4 Posted May 12 For me, manual focus and the distance scale is not working properly for both my Leica lenses and Sigma lenses on the SL3 (I do not have any LUMIX lenses yet). It is working properly on my SL3-S with the same Leica and Sigma lenses (although I am on older firmware, which I will update later today and then test). Photoworks Posted May 12 Share #5 Posted May 12 Works fine with Leica, Sigma, and Lumix lenses for me What is interesting, something I had never noticed before, is that you can do AF and hold while turning to fine-tune, and it still works.

How can the same camera with the same firmware act differently. It's so confusing. I just checked all my L-mount lenses on all my SL cameras.... Each camera/lens set to Manual focus. Cameras- SL2-s, SL3-s, SL3 Lenses- Leica 24-70, Leica 35 (non-APO), Leica TL 60mm macro, Lumix 50 1.8, Lumix 20-60, Lumix 16-35, Sigma 20 1.4, Sigma 100-400 SL2-s- Every lens works. SL3-s and SL3- the 3 Leica lenses work, other 5, Lumix and Sigma don't. It doesn't make any sense. The only thing I can come up with is what function everyone has assigned to the shutter half-press. I have "back button focus" enabled so only AE-L is set to shutter half-press. Even though my SL2-s is setup the same, there have been options added (confusingly I think) to the SL3 gen so maybe that could be the clue. Did you update the sigma and lumix lenses? did you do a reset often sl3 update?
scloop Posted May 13 Author Share #8 Posted May 13 I used the "Reset Camera" option in the menu, and that fixed the issue with my SL3. The manual focus distance scale now works properly with all my Leica and Sigma lenses.

I'm not familiar with "Reset Camera" but I assume it's equivalent to a hard reset and I should save and reload my Profiles?
Photoworks Posted May 14 Share #10 Posted May 14 Reset is always required after a firmware update to flash out the old code. It comes up at the end of the firmware process on the screen. to many people ignore it. You can always reload the settings

You can always reload the settings I consider myself pretty thorough and unlikely to skip over something if it’s presented as necessary. I’m always one to err on the side of a fresh install with my electronics and computers but I’ve never heard of such a thing in the camera world. If a reset is required, why on earth isn’t it just a part of the firmware update. Until this very firmware update you could expect your profiles to be wiped, yet this is the first and only one they literally advertise as the automatically reloading the profiles. Why would you then be expected to reset the camera and again reload them yourself?
