reemas Posted April 25 Share #1 Posted April 25 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Sort of new to the Q3 43 and wondering what automatic focus modes you prefer and why? What’s your default? When do you mix it up? I’ve gone back and forth between spot and field only, but will try experimenting with tracking and face more. Looking to learn from your tips and experience! Edited April 25 by reemas
Advertisement Posted April 25 Posted April 25 Hi reemas, Take a look here How do you focus?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Le Chef Posted April 25 Share #2 Posted April 25 I have set up different profiles - landscape, street, portrait, and manual - so use different exposure and focus settings across those profiles. One button press and I can choose which one I want.
TheLaird Posted April 25 Share #3 Posted April 25 Mostly using the focus ring as I bought the Leica to slow things down and take my time.
Tarekith Posted April 25 Share #4 Posted April 25 Usually Field or Center, then focus and recompose. Sometimes manual too when I don’t trust the built in AF.
JNK100 Posted April 25 Share #5 Posted April 25 AF -s, field and manually select point.
bobtodrick Posted April 25 Share #6 Posted April 25 As TheLaird or Tarekith…center focus and recompose when necessary or manual focus, which worked fine for nearly 40 years with my M4 and R3’s.

LocalHero1953 Posted April 25 Share #8 Posted April 25 Mainly face, with field as an alternative. I use the crop function to constrain the area for AF operation.
Mikep996 Posted April 26 Share #9 Posted April 26 I have always preferred spot for focus and center or spot for metering/ then lock AE if necessary and reframe. I have never been happy with field/multifield for focus OR metering because the camera (any camera, not just the Qs) sometimes focuses on something other than what I want in focus/same with metering. Obviously the choices will depend on the subject matter/your preferred method of operation. Great thing about digital cameras is that you can test all of the combinations and quickly see the results/figure out what works best for you! Cogito Posted May 1 Share #11 Posted May 1 modern autofocus is the achilles heel of the Q3 43. If one or two subjects in frame AF is fine, but I find I use manual more and more. If the Q is to be the gateway drug to M, this is how I'd design Q autofocus. 1

Good point .... but I'm the other way around .... an M user manual focus for as long as I can remember , new to Q3 43 .... and have zero problems with auto focus ... but slip into manual from time to time
