Sorry for another D-Lux 8 thread but I am quite enthusiastic today.

I bought a D-Lux 8 yesterday and so far I like it a lot, its so much fun.

I think it will replace some other small cameras I have owned. I am also pretty positive about IQ, what II have seen so far. It seems to beat the Canon g1x-iii (which has a dx sensor, but which shows much more flare in many situations. Maybe a little contrasty but overall the D-Lux 8 seems really to do fine.

I also have used and like Ricoh GR3(x) (probably even better IQ) but I also do value a certain zoom range.

The user interface/wheels/viewfinder make using the D-Lux feeling like a "real" camera.

Yes, 24 MP, step zoom, faster zooming etc. all would be great (also include Leica styles in camera, and give us a histogram when reviewing images, and a function to set focus point back to middle), but overall I think it's really a nice package, maybe the compact with best user interface ever (for my taste). The f-stop ring alone is a reason for me to prefer it over most other compacts, as well as having a decent evf.

Yes, I am aware the D-Lux 7 and Pana offer same technology in regards of IQ and the D-Lux 8 price is quite high, but its really fun.

It’s by far the closest pricing Leica have ever had to the Panny badged models and with the DL8 the ‘red dot tax’ is far easier to justify than ever before. At least to me anyway, the improved menu structure, the little lift in build quality and the absolutely gorgeous styling seem a bargain for an extra 20% or so.

Way back in the mists of time I had the LX2. At the very last second before a three week trip through Northern Arizona and Southern Utah I decided to leave all my EOS gear and Leaf back on a Mamiya behind and just take the teeny LX. That was probably the most I’ve ever enjoyed a photo trip and the images I got from my ‘toy’ camera still stand up today. I’ve tried other LX models since then but none have felt as fun to use as that one did. Perhaps until now?? The D Lux 8 really does look to have captured that elusive mix of fun, style and perfectly good image quality.
