Ours has the idea that we will most probably be delighted with the half mouse she deigned to leave for us on the lounge carpet ..... . Given that they come from the local farmer's barn, he at least is happy as his cattle food is saved. Edited April 9 by pgk

Real life is what happens while you're busy doing something else.... The daughters really wanted a kitten. That was almost 17 years ago. And they haven't lived with us for a while now. The "kitten" and the can openers have stayed... There are fewer mice these days, though.... Welcome, dear visitor! pippy Posted April 10 Share #26 Posted April 10 (edited) Speaking (typing?) personally I think it would be nice to know what our cats are called. So far I know that there is 'Hugo' and 'Tut' (and our own 'Scrap') but AFAIK that is all! If there is also a story behind the 'naming' that, too, would be interesting to read. Andy has explained Tut; ours was found as the proverbial abandoned-kitten-in-a-sack in a scrap-yard. Perhaps Hugo's favourite bedtime-story-book is Les Miserables?... I will be in France for a fortnight so no new pics coming from here but I will look forward to checking-in on this thread until we are once more reunited with our own moggie. Philip. espelt Posted April 10 Share #28 Posted April 10 The boy above is called "Finn." When he came to us 16 years ago, the family council met. And somehow, in the end, we thought it was quite fitting for him. As a Nordic name, Finn derives from the Old Norse name Finnr, meaning "wanderer" or "vagabond." He comes from a farm nearby. He grew up in a barn, stable, and garden. Keeping him indoors is completely impossible. He just has to go out and roam. Now, starting in April, when the weather is getting warmer again, he has his favorite spots in the garden. He doesn't wander around the neighborhood as much as he used to. But sometimes he's still out for half the day... Welcome, dear visitor! But on the other hand she likes to throw my highlighters from my desk - no idea who taught her that. 🤔😁 Well, of course, that wasn't meant entirely seriously. But perhaps it's addressed to some contemporaries who think they're giving themselves such a cute little animal for Easter or Christmas. As a toy. Which then, far too often, end up on the street or in an animal shelter. Sometimes not out of malice. It's just that animals cost money. And some people simply don't consider that. The animal shelters in our area are full of such poor creatures. Finn doesn't sleep in our beds. He's outside a lot, regardless of whether it's raining or snowing. He often comes home with dirty paws. He often brings presents with him. The tally so far this year: 5 whole mice, 2 half mice, a rat, 1 pigeon... I really wouldn't want to find all of that in or in front of my bed. He has his own "entrance." The cat flap leads to the boiler room. It's warm there; he has a basket with blankets there, and he likes to retreat there during the day. But at night he cannot go into the upper part of the house with the bedrooms.

Although 'Scrap' is a European Shorthair - which were bred to be 'mousers' working on farms - she has, this year, only brought home one dead mouse. The other six have all been very much alive which neccessitates considerable input from all concerned with the aim of releasing them back into their own domain. She will pretty much always fall asleep in our bedroom - she has her own chair set aside for the purpose - but at some point during the wee small hours she will find space on our bed and there she will remain until she has decided that it is now time for breakfast to be served at which point one of her staff-members will be awoken with a very gentle but well-aimed prod with just one outstretched claw below the bed-cover... We wouldn't have it any other way. Philip. Edited April 13 by pippy 1

A very stimulating activity. We've also tried it many times, usually with little immediate success. We live in a very old farmhouse with lots of hiding places between the wooden floorboards. Interestingly, our cat found the mice in the house much less exciting than outside. They're mostly shrews, which apparently don't taste good. Our daughters once developed the theory that Finn brings the mice home in the winter to keep them warm and dry. Since we're not good at catching mice, we always have live traps scattered around the house. If a mouse is caught in one, we release it about 3 km from the house, outside of town. If the distance is too short, they come back, and the game starts all over again.

evikne Posted April 14 Share #36 Posted April 14 Our new cat's name is Albert. A fairly common name for a normal house cat (or maybe more so for humans?). Our previous cat, which you may also have seen pictures of, was a Birman cat and had a more regal name, Aslan, which was inspired by the lion in Narnia. Welcome, dear visitor! pippy Posted April 14 Share #37 Posted April 14 (edited) 1 hour ago, espelt said: ...A very stimulating activity. We've also tried it many times, usually with little immediate success... Our house is only 100 years old (or so) and therefore nowhere near as entertaining (from the perspective of the mouse) as your own and hiding-places will be fewer and further between but the sitting-room - into which the mice are always brought - is of a fairly decent size and offers much in terms of a cat-and-mouse playground. For the purpose of recapturing the "wee sleekit' tim'rous beasties" we have found it to be essential that Scrap is part of the process; not because we encourage her pastime but because she will inevitably be the only one who can pinpoint the location of our prey. One cornered the task of dropping a small tupperware container over the intruder, slipping a sheet of card underneath the whole and taking the trap outside is usually fairly straightforward. On one occassion, however, a mouse has given us quite the chase; using the curtain-rails and upper swage-lines of the curtains themselves as escape routes / hiding crannies. That one was probably on a return visit and thinking; "Oh Bugger it. Here we go again..."... Just for fun here's a pic taken last October (and, I believe, posted somewhere here at the time?) of Scrap in one of her 'beds'. Camera was the M-D 262 fitted with a 7Artisan 50mm f1.1, pic snapped at max. ap;; Welcome, dear visitor!
