It's possible you may have a different name for it. It is a hut used by shepherd's to shelter sheep. And it may be used to shelter other livestock if needs be.

Your comment made me realise that I was making an assumption so I had a word with my neighbour who is a livestock and large animal vet here in the Peak District. This is part of his reply:

“In and around the industrial areas of mining the miners that lived in the local villages had a small amount of land on which to keep a couple of cows. They used the top half of the small barns for hay storage and the cows used the bottom half in winter.

In the summer, they would be milked in the field.

The lack of a chimney stack means that there was no intention of human habitation in the barn.

The white peak and Yorkshire in deed, are littered with these barns and they are protected.”

Thanks for prompting me to investigate and learn more about these barns which are a common sight in this part of the country. 👍
