Hi Everyone! I hope everything is well for you.

I have a question, maybe silly one but i would like to hear your opinions. I have m10m and using it with only summilux 50mm. Lately i want to shoot with camera which has AF and ibis so leica q3 43 came up for me. If i trade my m10m with it, i will use it mostly (%90-95) b&w mode.
Monochrom camera has its own unique image quality of course but i heard that 43mm apo lens is very good for b&w as well. I rarely use f1.4, so f2 is ok for me. Q3 43 has ibis so maybe i dont need clarity of m10m as high iso like 12500-25000.
I know that they are different cameras and different feel but i just want to hear your opinions that leica q3 43 could satisfy my needs of b&w or not.
Thanks in advance.

The Apo Summicron and the 60 megapixels of the Q will give you a very sharp impression. If you use the jpg as the black and white of the Q you will be disappointed compared to the M. If you want to convert RAW photos to black and white with Silvereffex, you must be aware that you will have to put in a lot of extra work in image editing. Since you want to take 90 to 95% black and white photos, I wouldn't go to the trouble of doing that, nor would I accept the slightly lower black and white quality of the Q.

Since we have 100 years of Leica, I would wait and speculate that there will be a Q3 M this year and then ask myself the question again.

My approach would be to try out the option myself. Maybe you can borrow or test the Q343 at a dealer or a Leica store - shoot some pictures in DNG with BW JPG and check out if it fits your needs.

I for myself didn‘t see a lot of difference using my old Q2M DNGs and pictures out of my Q2 or Q3 DNGs converted to BW or even JPGs straight out of the camera. But this is just me.

@M Street Photographer has a different opinion, I totally can understand. So, you only can decide for yourself.

And beware: M and Q are completely different approaches on taking photos… that‘d be more important for me personally.

Anyway: Have fun with your camera(s).

Best

I have a Q3 (28) and M10 Monochrom although only with 35mm f2 on the M10. There is not a huge amount of diiference when printed. The Q3 is quite contrasty and when processed in mono converts better than other systems (Nikon/Pentax etc).  Suspect at the higher iso settings, 1600 and above, the differences will be more noticeable.

If a couple of DNG files will help send me a direct message

Perhaps you can download some DNG samples from e.g. DPReview and try to convert them to b/w and see if they satisfy your needs

I did that btw, and it was kind of tricky. Some of them were good almost as native monochrom, but some of them were artificial because of covering capability of shadows i think. I know that q3 43 b&w files wont be like m10m but it has own abilities that sometimes i need. Thats why i am confused :)

I agree about higher iso settings, where m10m shines. How much i need that, i dont know exactly, because i never check my iso values with m10m :)

I had problems with my m10m about calibration sometimes, focusing lately and weather conditions. Thats why i started to think to change it with smt else. Leica q3 43 solves these problems but it will give my b&w taste or not, i couldnt get it suddenly even i try it for a short time. I didnt like that much my m10m for a short time but i loved it when i used it more and more.

I am kind of a guy that i should buy stuff and use it as i dont have another option :)

Then I'll happily repeat: since a Q3 monochrome is overdue, I would assume that a monochrome will be released this year. I would definitely wait a bit longer.

I would like to wait too, though i didnt see any news about new q monochrom camera. Q3 43 monochrom would be great, very very great :)

I traded in my m10m plus 50 asph lux for a q43. No regrets, but I bought the m9m plus 50mm pre asph recently.

The Q is great, but a monochrom is special…

What do you think about b&w conversions of leica q3 43? It differs a lot from monochrom camera?
And if its not secret, why did you trade your m10m with q3 43? :)

The workflow is different, I prefer to take b/w with a M. The SL and Q are for colour (primary).

Not a secret: the q is a perfect daily camera, to be carried without a bag. It’s weatherproof, it has AF when needed and macro.

The m10m is a great camera, but “too” perfect for me. I prefer my b/w images to be a bit more gritty, hence the step down to the original monochrom.

it comes down to whether or not you want AF and don't want color. If you do want AF and/or color, go with the Q3. If you don't want either, the M10M wins.

If you have money to burn, get both.

For what it's worth, I have the M11M, absolutely my favorite camera ever, and I pair it with some great Leica glass depending on my mood/intention. But I just got a Q3 that I'll use when I need AF - such as moving street situations. If I'm not planning on shooting moving street, then my M11M is the go to camera - unless I'm in the mood for color in which case I'll use my M10R for non-moving street situations.

Recently i feel that i need to have AF and EVF, thats why i considered to change my m10m with q3 43. In fact i would like to change it with q2 monochrom but i love shooting at 50mm and i dont have any idea how cropping would work for me. Leica q3 43 is more close to my taste, but bw files from m10m are imaginary for me. So i am stuck :)

I think I read somewhere that high ISO conversions of Q3 files from color to b/w are not up to the quality of high ISO images from the M10M or Q2M.

That could be a problem for me, because not often but sometimes i shoot at night and m10m is helping me a lot.

Just a pedantic point: the Q3 has O.I.S. and not I.B.I.S which may be a factor for you.

Do you know how many stops OIS have? If its not giving an effect at least 3-4 stops, that would be a problem.
