ktmrider2 Posted March 1 Share #3 Posted March 1 Personal taste. How do you prefer to carry the camera: from your shoulder or in a case to be taken out and used with a wrist strap. I use a wrist strap on my GR3 because it is carried in a pocket when not in use. The Q3 is too large to fit in a pocket so I use Leica’s leather strap which comes in the box which is a bit too long for my taste. Am traveling around the world at the moment so something to take care of back in the USA. By the way, I have seen two other Q3’s on my RTW trip. Lots of tourists here in Egypt and also finding having both Q3 and Ricoh GR3 works well.
spydrxx Posted March 1 Share #4 Posted March 1 Over the years I've tried both. My conclusion was that the shoulder strap was infinitely more useful than the wrist strap, which always seemed to get in the way when I wanted to do something with my hands. But to each his own.
Trankster Posted March 1 Share #5 Posted March 1 As said, it is a matter of personal preference. I have used PD wrist straps when walking around with the camera in a sling bag and with a much smaller camera (GR3 and Pen-F). However, when out for a day of hiking or walking about with my Q3, I prefer a rope type strap worn sling style (cross body). It is easier and faster to bring the camera to eye level to take a photo. wolfewithane Posted March 1 Share #6 Posted March 1 I recently bought a neck strap from Art and Artisan. Love it. To me, a wrist strap deprives you of use of one of your hands. If you have to change lenses, put on filters or open a tripod, you have to stick your camera in a bag or gawd forbid: set it down somewhere. If the camera is around your neck you have full use of both hands.
PhotoCruiser Posted March 1 Share #7 Posted March 1 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I never use neck straps for many many years now as i find them uncomfortable to use. I either hold my cameras in my hand or have it in a small sling bag or a normal, non photo messenger bag depending what i need to carry. Both cameras are for protection in a inexpensive top loading (colt style) camera bag in the size for just the camera and that works for me perfectly for the Q2 as i have no other stuff to carry. For extended foto walks i use a bigger same type camera bag to fit the Q2, the Elpro52 near lens and one flash plus lens cleaning stuff. My Q2 has the original finger loop to have a safer grip, my SL2 has a hand grip from Amazon for the same reason, to keep the camera safely attached to my hand. I tried a wrist strap and found it too "complicated" to slip in/out the sling and that i am faster to slip my fingers in the original Leica finger grip on the Q2 or half of my hand in the bigger one for my SL2. As above written, its a personal preference what to use, A+A straps are excellent quality and good looking so nothing wrong with either. Sharpshooter Posted March 1 Share #8 Posted March 1 Yes, you can buy a cheap rope strap or you can get an Artisan & Artist neck strap and follow the instructions in this video and have the best of both worlds - the relevant part is between 1:10 and 1:50 if you don’t want to watch the whole thing. It’s how I now carry mine most of the time, specially when in town.
Almizilero Posted March 1 Share #9 Posted March 1 Camera Strap: When I just want to take the camera without a bag. Wrist Strap: Never Finger Strap: 1) When I keep the camera in my hand for longer periods of time / 2) When I take a bag and want the camera secured while it's out. Tarekith Posted March 1 Share #10 Posted March 1 I use a wrist strap when I’m going out for just an hour or two solo knowing the focus will be on photography the whole time. I like holding the camera and always having it instantly ready. Sometimes I’ll bring my PD 3L sling in case I need a break or if conditions are such I might want to do a quick clean or lens change (ie snowing, the beach, etc). If I’m just going out on a longer walk and bringing the camera just in case (or I have my dog with me on leash), I’ll switch to a strap worn sling style to free up my hands. In general I don’t like that as much as the wrist strap, I just don’t find it that comfortable. Up until now I’ve used the PD slings and wrist straps to make switching quick and easy. However since getting my Q3 43, I’m a bit less of a fan of these as I can’t find strap locks that don’t flop around making noise. This really bugs me as I have to leave the left side PD anchor attached all the time, waiting for some Sony ones that don’t do this to get back in stock. Just ordered a long Artisan & Artists flat silk strap with the intent of leaving it on permanently, and I’ll use this method to convert it to a wrist strap for the shorter walks.
LocalHero1953 Posted March 1 Share #11 Posted March 1 (edited) For the Q it's a wrist strap 99% of the time, and the camera in a shoulder bag when it's not in use. That's mainly because when I am using those cameras I want to keep it out of sight. I also dislike neck straps, whether hung forward or cross body, because they feel like they're going to swing and hit something; they also take up space when in a bag. I am happy to drop the Q and let it hang from my wrist if I need two hands, for something fiddly (like reading a guide book), but obviously cautiously to avoid it swinging into something. I treated a digital M the same when I had one, and now do the same with my new model MP. I'm less trustworthy of the lug strength and attachment of my M4 and Barnacks, so use a neck strap. My SL2-S has a hand strap, which makes it secure to grip and to hold one-handed at my side, even with the 90-280 lens. RQ44 Posted March 2 Share #12 Posted March 2 (edited) Strap, you can always wrap the strap around your wrist in a clever way so that it does not come off. Wrist straps are ok but useless f you are on the move need to use both hands without placing camera away from you. Edited March 2 by RQ44

There is a much more secure and reliable method than this. This still allows for it to be ripped off your wrist.

keithlaban.co.uk Posted March 2 Share #15 Posted March 2 It has always been 100% wrist straps on my Leica M, Leica Q and Nikon Z cameras. The only exception in recent years have been Hasselblad V and H series cameras where I always worked out of a shoulder bag.
Tseg Posted March 4 Share #16 Posted March 4 I've used a Gordy's wrist strap on my FF Fixed Lens cameras going back 12 years starting with my RX1. Welcome, dear visitor! microview Posted March 4 Share #17 Posted March 4 "recently bought a neck strap from Art and Artisan. Love it." Always used their wrist straps on Q1 then Q2, but with my Q3 43 I am by far preferring the neck strap. Good for yanking camera off a table, etc.

The strap is called a J-loop and it attaches to his La Cravate wrist strap, which attaches to the camera. I find it very useful and secure having the wrist strap always on the camera. It helps when I grab it, move it, and slide it in or out of my bag; when I shoot, it is there ready for me to slip over my wrist. And then when I want to carry the camera on the strap, it attaches to the wrist loop with a quick snap. His work is handmade, beautiful, quite customizable, and I find it reasonably priced for what it is in comparison to others like Art & Artisan. Additionally, since it arrived I have been shocked at how small, flexible, and pliable it is for a leather strap.

LocalHero1953 Posted March 6 Share #20 Posted March 6 I have one of those 'choke' type wrist straps in woven cord, but don't use it - they pull tight around my wrist and get stuck there when I'm trying to put the camera back in the bag in a hurry. While leather ones may be more springy and forgiving, I wouldn't touch a strap, wrist or neck, with that amount of metalwork. I value my camera and lenses too much.
