I've been dreaming about a 'new' 50mm collapsible Summicron with modern glass and coatings for years.

EDIT: a re-issue of the 50mm f/2.8 collapsible Elmar would be nice too.

Wasn't there a 1:1.0/35mm limited edition that appeared with a limited edition digital Leica?!

Yep - it was a Russian lens (Zenit Zenitar) packaged with a badge-engineered "Zenit" camera based on the last of the unsold Leica M (typ 240) cameras.

Not exactly what one would call "svelte." 🤪

I request something small, compact, brass… something to pair with my Summaron 28. It can be a mashup of multiple lenses like the new 50 lux classic. Focal length 35 or 50. I’m fine with collapsible, but prefer to avoid it given the choice. Really what I want is the same rendering, colors, vignetting, and lack of distortion. We have a lot of big heavy lens options with Leica. Something small would be nice. Price point and build quality similar to the Summaron 28 too. What lens am I dreaming of?

28mm Elmarit V4: as Leica themselves said "This lens is particularly popular among professional photographers." So it is a legend. Live up to it. [I tried my hands on a 28mm 11801 a few weeks ago and I was surprised the centre looked like:

35mm Summicron IV KOB. That is for me mucho interesting. It is maybe very hard to remake it, with that stunning center presentation

50mm Rigid? Was that only great because of the meticulous craftmanship of the housing/alignment?

50mm Elmar-M. I have been noticing that the price of is going up in the Stores. But a collapsible re-edition with the formal prohibition to use it is totally useless.

Would be amazing because it’s such a gem but don’t you think they would go straight for the Summicron v1 8 element instead?

Probably not likely, but a more modern MATE (or variant) for travel might be of interest. Otherwise, I’m pleased that none of these lens (or camera) releases have prompted any GAS for me. Getting older saves money (and will return some when I get around to selling a few more items), as does printing, which maintains priorities for me.

I'd be thrilled with either 35mm, but also think an Summicron 8-element v1 would get the green light. Maybe the 35mm 2.8 Summaron would fit better price wise since the Classic line seems to need sit slightly below the ASPH range. And the 2.8 version would perhaps be different enough than the reissue Steel Rim.

I'd also give a vote for the 21mm 4.0 Super-Angulon remake...it would compliment the 21mm Lux and F/3.4 ASPH versions and could create a nice line of Classic slow speed primes.

21mm   Super-Angulon
35mm  Summaron
50mm  Summicron Rigid

Factoring the price point into the calculation is a good idea, a very affordable classic 35mm 2.8 could be something… How much cheaper than the steel rim could it be though? Back in the 60s the Summaron sold for about half the price of the Lux… The steel rim is 4K, so let‘s say 2K. That’s about what the Summarit retailed for, no?

All this is really making me think from Leica's point of view it is way better to stop making the Noct 1.2 classic when sales dip. Then come out with a Summilux 75 classic. They can probably sell it for a very good chunk of change like the Noct 1.2. I would still love to see a classic brass 35 2.8 or even a 2.0 over a 75.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the Summar.

A clean new one would be really interesting…a coated one even more so.

Good one. Rigid and BP, while we are at it.

I read by Puts about the then re-issued 50mm Elmar-M:

Quote

This redesign has been significantly improved. At full aperture very fine details are recorded with very crisp edges and good clarity. This compact (collapsible) lens is a front-rank design for very high requirements.

The MTF resembles the newest light from Wetzlar - the 50mm-M Classic Lux!

Likewise, a re-classified Summicron 50mm/Rigid - improved in rendering and in fit to the flat sensors - but retaining the slight 'edge' in the bokeh, that would fit as a charm in a setting of a similarly renewed 35mm/KOB that has retained its distant bokeh rings, and imho the new Summiluz. The background rendering then is a different choice but the central affair (presentation) is similar.

And make them light please, we do not pay per pound. I once had a 50mm Black Chrome Lux, soooo heavy. Probably brass allows better workmanship. but..we..
