kirkmc Posted February 12 Share #41 Posted February 12 Advertisement (gone after registration) I actually prefer something grippier like the Leica. Yes, it's not as pocketable, but it's easier to hold on to. Leica announced the acquisition last June.
Advertisement Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Hi kirkmc, Take a look here Leica LUX Grip. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

This is what the slim documentation says. If I press and hold the shutter button, a green LED comes on, but the grip isn't active. If I then tap the menu button, the app quits. When I relaunch the app, then the grip is connected. There's clearly a communication problem, that I assume will be fixed with an update to the app soon. I've sent them feedback from within the app. I did watch a video and the guy said the first time you set the grip up you need to do it via the app and not the normal Bluetooth settings on the iPhone. Not sure if this will help. Edited February 12 by G19
kirkmc Posted February 12 Share #43 Posted February 12 Yes, you pair the grip like any Bluetooth device. But it’s turning it back on after it goes to sleep that is a problem.
Goon525 Posted February 13 Share #44 Posted February 13 I don’t know if anyone has tried it with an iPhone 15 or earlier? There seems to be something about the implementation of Bluetooth on the 16 which causes problems.
MacSpikes Posted February 13 Share #45 Posted February 13 Bought it yesterday and have tried it connected to an iPhone 16 pro. The build of the grip is very nice, the magnetic connection is very solid. The problem I ran into is reconnection when either iPhone or grip are sleeping. I have had situations where a 3-sec press of the shutter button was enough, but sometimes this does not work. If I try to use the grip nothing happens, I then go to settings within the Lux app and the grip shows to be "connected". Going back to the first screen (the picture camera) now shows the grip connected and is functional. I short: nice device, but needs some serious software/firmware updates. kirkmc Posted February 13 Share #46 Posted February 13 Yes, that’s exactly what I’m seeing.
Goon525 Posted February 13 Share #47 Posted February 13 Advertisement (gone after registration) And is consistent with my experience with a ShiftCam Snapgrip. As I say above, there’s some reason to think it’s something to do with Bluetooth implementation on the latest iPhones rather than an actual product fault. That’s why I’m keen that someone with an iPhone 14 or 15 tries it.
Foxtwo Posted February 13 Share #48 Posted February 13 (edited) Leica released a LUX app update today that includes - “Improvements to the pairing process for our new LUX Grip” Edited February 13 by Foxtwo
kirkmc Posted February 13 Share #49 Posted February 13 Yep, it seems to be working as expected now.
Foxtwo Posted February 13 Share #50 Posted February 13 After the update today, can you activate the camera from an iPhone in sleep mode with it’s screen off, by pressing and holding the shutter button? Or do you have to activate the camera first, by swiping on the screen (or waking the phone with faceID, select camera app, etc.)? Being able to do the former seems to be a make or break feature for the Grip device.

Being able to do the former seems to be a make or break feature for the Grip device. I wouldn’t expect an external device to be able to open the camera on the iPhone. While you can access the built-in camera amp by swiping on the lock screen, any other camera app needs the iPhone to be unlocked, and a hardware device can’t do this, you can only do this with face ID or touch ID. Just swipe left on the lock screen, or press the camera control button on an iPhone 16. It doesn’t give access to the rest of the phone. I would expect the grip to open the camera quickly. Hmmmm. Guess not, then.
Goon525 Posted February 14 Share #53 Posted February 14 I think that’s a bit unreasonable - simply not technically possible, I fear. Good news though that it sounds like the update solves the basic problem.

MacSpikes Posted February 16 Share #55 Posted February 16 The pairing still takes a lot of time and I need to switch to setting and back before the grip connects.
kirkmc Posted February 16 Share #56 Posted February 16 Same here. It was working for a while after the update, but now it’s not reliable again.
G19 Posted February 18 Share #57 Posted February 18 Interesting that in the UK, no stock is available for purchase online, which either means they are extremely popular or that they have suspended sales until any software issues are sorted out
Coppereye Posted February 18 Share #58 Posted February 18 I have only just seen that this grip is available. It popped up when I was using the LUX app. I use the LUX app when I haven’t got my Q with me, and as I’m getting older forgetting my Q, my name etc is getting more frequent. So I was surprised to see that it has been available ( on and off ) for a few weeks. what surprised me ( but it shouldn’t ) was the price point £260, but they do give you a Pro Lux license. Then I saw that there was a case at a Leica low price of only £50. The thing is that if it had been available online I would probably have bought it and actually used it ! BUT we all know that it won’t technically make better pictures, maybe they will be more level, as it uses the same glass that Apple use ( not knocking the Apple glass - the images are very good and I’m on iPhone 13 Pro Max). I know that there is software behind the Lux app that produces the “look” of a Leica camera and various lenses. Actually, if software can reproduce the “Leica Look” why do we spend our life savings ( and maybe the odd kidney ) to buy the lenses that we treat with reverance ?

Although the only two options I have are Mayfair or Harrods. A train journey there and back from Nottingham costs as much as the grip so I’m going to wait till they can send one. kirkmc Posted February 18 Share #60 Posted February 18 I bought it out of curiosity. Obviously, you're limited to the lens and the resolution of an iPhone (12 Mp). But the lens simulation thing is actually quite cool. I'm surprised that I like it so much. Here's one example. Welcome, dear visitor!
