Learn to adjust the rangefinder yourself - that is one of the simplest 'repairs" that we can easily do for 0 $ out of pocket. AND - it really does make a big difference! My M11 was off in both directions - so I bought the appropriate little tool, and adjusted it both horizontally and vertically. Now it wrks great and if I ever bump it or drop it, I have the tool in the bag ready to go.

My next adventure is to get to the point where I can get into the lenses and clean and adjust myself - that would be awesome. Working on that next...

I know how to adjust the horizontal (and will next time), but do you have official instructions or something you can share for the vertical adjustment?

Known issue with this lens. I finally had to send the mint used one I got back to Leica. Fine since.

I received the replacement lens today. This one is back-focusing at all apertures. The aperture ring is also entirely too easy to rotate. It clicks, but it doesn't take much force to get it out of a detent and spin it.

How long does Leica normally take for lens repairs like this?

The vertical adjustment is the same - it's beneath the red dot. Use a razor blade to pry the red dot off  - make the adjustment, and then just press it back on again. You can use some double sided tape if necessary to get it back on there. Easy!

For the vertical do you actually test rangefinder accuracy while holding it in portrait mode or no?

Ideally you want to use a 1.4x magnifier to check alignment at infinity for both vertical and horizontal. If you see some difference between different lenses then obviously there are lens issues to be sorted. There are so many factors - lens differences, focus shift at different f stops etc. that what seems to be the best practice is to get it aligned at infinity and then check that the lens you’re using is indeed sharp wide open there.

I have to say that I have not had much trouble with any of my 9 lenses being off. Once I got the camera adjusted they all seem pretty accurate….

Let me tell you a story (no it's not about my dead m11d or file-eating m11).
I brought my brand new summilux steel rim remake to Kanto camera in Japan to do a repaint. The technician said they need to CLA it first. I was like, seriously? it's brand new though. "but it's not up to our standards" is the answer I got. And yes, the focus ring is indeed not as smooth as some of my older leica lenses.
Oh btw, this is the replacement copy I got from Leica, because my initial steel rim has a wobbly aperture ring issue.

Go figure.

I red your rednote post, insanity
