bqwertpl Posted January 28 Share #1 Posted January 28 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone. When I purchased the Leica Q3 43 mm at local photo store I was offered additional insurance protection plan on it. It would be good for everything but fire and theft. Accidental drops included. However, even with the discounted price it still came up to over $700 for 5 years or over $400 for 3 years. Does anyone have any experience with www.mackcam.com and is it worth it? I have 30 days from the purchase day to get it if I want. Transferable to new owner if I decide to sell it. Also, I would basically drop the camera at the local store and they would take care of it for me so I would not have to deal with the insurance people. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Hi bqwertpl, Take a look here Mack Worldwide Warranty for Leica Q3 43 - worth it or skip it?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
darylgo Posted January 28 Share #2 Posted January 28 A personal decision, I'd rather keep the money for insurance premiums on non critical items such as appliances, cameras etc. and simply pay for repairs. What would your home insurer charge for a policy that covers repairs, theft etc for your camera?
Le Chef Posted January 28 Share #3 Posted January 28 Most equipment failure happens within the first few months of ownership. And that is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Beyond that it depends on how you use the equipment. If you are a pro, you can write off equipment and insurance. If you are worried about theft, take out specific rider to your home policy, or a specific policy for items like watches, jewelry and cameras. theres more homework to be done, but I would start with your home insurance agent and ask questions. JNK100 Posted January 28 Share #4 Posted January 28 I am not sure about the US, but here in the UK, if your register your camera you get a three year warranty. Do these Mack warranty periods sometimes include these initial years? I would not go ahead personally.
Stuart Richardson Posted January 28 Share #5 Posted January 28 Like all insurance, it is a gamble. Depending of where you are located, the Leica warranty is already at least one year, possibly more. Then you are betting that if you have a problem, it will not already be covered by that. You are also betting that the potential cost of fixing that damage will be greater than the cost of the warranty you are buying. But that it will also not be outside the terms and conditions of the Mack warranty. The circle of probability that the warranty will be useful closes with each additional condition that you have to meet. Basically, you know one thing for sure: you are on the losing end of the deal. If you were not, they would not have a business. So the question becomes, are the consequences of me not buying it bad enough for me to likely to lose my 400-700 dollars. That is a question that only you can answer. For a house or a car, the answer is usually yes. For a camera? Perhaps not. Leicas certainly are expensive though, so maybe it could be. bobtodrick Posted January 28 Share #6 Posted January 28 As stated most defects occur within a camera’s factory warranty period. We offer a lifetime warranty (not the Mack. Let’s just say it is our most profitable line item because it is so seldom user. I personally don’t recommend them to my customers.
BradS Posted January 28 Share #7 Posted January 28 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) is it worth it? NO! Absolutely not worth it. You will get about as much value from that insurance policy as you would by setting 400 one dollar bills on fire and heating you coffee on the flames. ...and besides, if you are buying a quality product, why should you need or pay for a warrantee? Is it quality or not? Edited January 28 by BradS
Jeff S Posted January 28 Share #8 Posted January 28 That’s more expensive than the insurance I use for all my gear, and that covers virtually all circumstances, including fire and theft, accidental loss, etc, worldwide and without deductible. Pass.
David Wien Posted January 28 Share #9 Posted January 28 (edited) Very slow website. FAQ says: "The warranty does not cover products which have been misused, tampered with, modified or damaged as a result of accident, liquid, grit, impact, lack of proper care as indicated in the manual of operation by the manufacturer." Are they actually able to repair a Leica? I would suggest you put your $700 into a local credit union interest-bearing account and use it in case of need.
