William,

My father's Summar was we believe, coated by Oude Delft in 1948 or 49 by their Delfinerin process. He visited the Netherlands a few times around this period, as a board member of the Scottish Woollen Manufacturer's Association, who were helping that country's textile industry to get back on its feet. Much of their previous machinery had been damaged by bombing or appropriated by the occupying power. His original coating was of a brownish hue and was very soft. After it was recoated by Wallace Heaton with "hard" coating in 1965, it changed to a purple/blue hue.

My two speed MOOLY does work on my Model III but it is such a lovely small camera (I think the black enamel may make it look smaller than it is), that I don't keep my MOOLY on it and have to live with the uncomfortable for me, winding on process. I tried a Leicavit but equally uncomfortable. What I really need is one of those "ring pull winders" sitting in place of the regular wind on knob.

The RAPIDO, not a leitz item, works well. It's a little hard to pull if the camera is not winding easily, like it would be after a recent CLA.

Some moolys may have been shipped together with a new camera from the factory. Probably, the grey and "K" cameras mostly. But  many were likely purchased by existing leica camera owners that wanted to add a motor to their older camera, even a II or III.  So, there may not be real basis for matching motor serials to cameras, other than the longer based motors would be for IIIc or later cameras.

Just to show a general evolution, here are some possibilities:

Left:  IIIa with fairly early 2-speed mooly.  Circa 1938

Second from left:  IIIb with later single speed mooly. Circa 1939

Next: Early war time IIIc (361077) with the longer based, internal release, chrome mooly. Circa 1940/41

Right: Post war IIIc, black with long based black mooly. Circa 1947/49
