Not much information is available about the Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens & Leica SL cameras (SL601, SL2, SL2-S &SL3) .

The lens is heavy (1.2 kg) and was designed in the line of Sigma CINE lenses.

It's obviously much heavier than the Sigma DG DN alternatives (35 & 50 f1.4).

How good is this lens in terms of photography? Good experience? Autofocus?

Many thanks in advance

The Sigma 40mm 1.4 Art is a howitzer: big, heavy, and with some serious punch! 😉

No, seriously: the 40mm delivers truly outstanding quality. You can really feel what you’re getting in terms of performance for the size and weight. The autofocus isn’t the fastest since it has to move a lot of glass, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using it on the GFX 100s, and even with the 100-megapixel resolution, it still delivered impressively in every regard.

I don’t have a direct comparison with the SL Apo lenses, but they probably won’t be much different in terms of size and weight. Especially considering that the Sigma, priced at €749, is a real no-brainer. It pairs beautifully with the 105mm Art, which is like the heavy artillery of lenses. It complements the 40mm perfectly: top-notch image quality all around.

Here are a few shots taken with the 40mm Art on the GFX 100s.
I hope the brilliant image quality of this Art lens doesn't suffer too much due to the low resolution used for the forum.

It is quite a bit bigger...the Leica is a 67mm filter, the Sigma an 82mm. The Leica is 740g vs 1295g.  It is a stop faster and I am sure it is a good lens. The better comparison is probably the 50mm 1.4 Summilux, which also has an 82mm filter. It is, however, "only" 1065g. The Sigma is indeed a heavy beast.
