Hi,

so i did purchased the M9 with replaced sensor and it's on the way.. I wonder what happens and how to proceed when I want to use it with modern lenses release after latest fw update and which are not supported by firmware? It will show up as uncoded and I would have to manually choose the lens to the closest one?

Nothing happens. If lens if 50mm or lomger I wouldn't bother as '6 bit' adjustments are minimal. For wider than 50 if you want you could try your judgement of a listed lens, and see difference with and without code. Mostly affects vignetting.

Good question, most likely the code will be ignored and the lens reported as uncoded (that's what happens on my M11, if I use an unknown lens code on a hand-coded lens). In this case you could use an appropriate one from the list or leave it as is. Modern lenses typically do not exhibit a color shift, so only vignetting could be corrected in camera.

You should test the result of a specific setting - scenarios are possible where the result is worse than the original (due to color shift correction). In some cases it might not be appropriate to select a closely matching lens type - say a Summicron 2/35 for the modern APO Summicron 2/35, because those two have totally different optical designs.

Worried? The only factual data you will get in the EXIF will be from 6-bit coded lenses, or lenses listed in the camera FW. If this is vital your best chance is with whatever M is current and latest FW. Obviously, the older the camera/FW the bigger the disparity with recent lens launches.

There has been a couple of cases in the past when we knew a new lens was coming as it was listed in a FW release ahead of announcement.

It's understandable that the work to update 8-bit for each older model isn't economically feasible. The codes trigger edge color and vignetting corrections, and those corrections need to be experimentally determined for each different sensor - lens combination - which is a lot more work than just a tweak to recognize the code.

But it would be nice just to recognize the lens. I coded my Nokton 35 1.4 ver II as the Steel-Rim Summilux re-issue for my M10, but of course my M9 ignores it.

Indeed. Or just ignore all of it. Coding is overrated if you are using DNG and Lightroom.

I keep forgetting to choose 21/4 after 50 1.5 and in the opposite. Nothing significant happen. :)

The only practical reason for coding is to have focal length and somewhat guessed aperture in EXIF.
