I have never seen a lens outperform a sensor, even old lenses tend to be better on new (better) sensors. As far as the Vario-Elmarit is concerned: the combination with (in my case) the S5IIx worked as good as on my Leica SL.

There are no lenses that outperform a sensor. Nor the other way around. It is not a weakest link situation but an additive image making system in which the components complement each other.
