A_Thought_2_Day Posted January 1 Share #1  Posted January 1 Advertisement (gone after registration) Talk me out of a M246 for $3000. I currently a X-Pro2, Epson R-D1 & Ricoh GXR M-Mount as personal cameras. The M246 comes with the leica Visoflex EVF2, 2 extra batteries charger box and Multifunctional Handgrip. Its in excellent condition. I have a 2 camera rule so I would need to get rid of the two m mount cameras if I bought it. Talk me out of it. What are the cons is it too much? A little background. Im at a point in life where the less editing I have to do the better. I try to get it right with jpegs. I'll never get rid of the fuji (again). The Epson's jog dial is broken so I get raw images in color and Jpegs in Black and White. But it's for night shooting or dim light. The gxr is already on the chopping block. Talk me out of the M246 what am I missing whay are it's faults in 2025? What are it's limitations?
Advertisement Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Hi A_Thought_2_Day, Take a look here Leica M240 talk me out of it? Or pulled the trigger?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 1 Share #2  Posted January 1 You’ve come to the wrong place. GAS is highly contagious. Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
A_Thought_2_Day Posted January 1 Author Share #3 Â Posted January 1 @jaapvi was afraid of that. Lol. That said is there any reason you might not consider the M246? Do you think the price is right for what I described above?
Mute-on Posted January 1 Share #4  Posted January 1 Ditch the Ricoh. Buy the Leica. Life is too short (and a Leica is too good to ignore…)
jaapv Posted January 1 Share #5  Posted January 1 The only reason might be age and serviceability in the future. Hear me-my favourite M is the M9 Monochrom. 🙃
Ernstk Posted January 1 Share #6 Â Posted January 1 Why do you want to be talked out of it? Do you not want a Monochrom? It might be a bit of a waste to buy a Monochrom and then only produce jpegs. Ernst
Einst_Stein Posted January 1 Share #7 Â Posted January 1 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have M240, but if I were to replace it, I would go SL2 or the similar. Add M lens to Al body, of course. I think you can get if for $2K+ I see the only or major drawback of SLx is the battery consumption, due to SLx EVF, unless you really care the M style of form factor. fotomas Posted January 1 Share #8 Â Posted January 1 If you don't like post processing stay away. The files from the Monchrom are dull and gray and need a lot of pp to become a nice bw-picture. I had to admit I found the analog process more pleasant for bw. You can change the settings for JPEGs to high contrast, but then the midtones are almost gone. If that's ok for you go.
Dazzajl Posted January 1 Share #9  Posted January 1 I love my 246. Its limitations are mostly from being an M, rather than anything model specific. With the exception of shutter lag if you want to use live view or the EVF. It’s not totally prohibitive but it can be enough to the miss the moment if you’re shooting movement.  The files are lovely to work with. Some tweaks will be needed but rarely more than contrast and levels. A few seconds in PP for a fantastic looking image is definitely a fair exchange.  I would have no hesitation recommending one, although I would still love an original M Monochrom. Something about those files are just a world apart from anything else.
A_Thought_2_Day Posted January 1 Author Share #10  Posted January 1 Enablers, the lot of you. Haha. I bought it. @Mute-onthe GXR is already up on the bay.  @Ernstk the biggest two reasons for preferring the jpegs are time ( full time job from 0600 -1700 and a 2 soon to be two year at old), and Idolising some of my photography heroes who shot film (although chances are they did some post processing themselves) .  @Einst_Stein  that's a valid point I owned an SL previously and like the images that came out of it. But I prefer rangefinder style bodies and the SLR's that I do have I demand alot out of. The SL was a great camera but the panasoinc S1 won me over in the end. @fotomas Thanks for the advice. I think I'm leaning the way that @Dazzajl recommended and I'll create a preset with a slight tweak in darktable. I think you'll all be happy to know that I pulled the trigger. I'll give updates once I receive the camera.
