Why do photographers want to make their digital images look like film anyway…?

After reading to her this post, I showed my wife your landscape picture.
she said : “ oh my Jesus!” .

It was Jesus that gave me that gift…!

Because, in digital photography, perfection is beyond reality.

while, in film photography, or rather the analog world, we are more comfortable in the imperfect, natural surrounding.

like a very seasoned dish that tastes very exiting at the first place,

but people do like the basic, back yard, charcoal grilled steak more in the end.

my 5 cents.

If someone tells me my photographs "look like paintings," I consider that a deadly insult. 🤪

A photographer is an artist…🧑‍🎨

In the digital age, film has become the new "truth serum"  Many people are making small independent films on actual film,,  SOLELY because a large mass of people believe that anything done on film is BETTER by default.  And that goes with both movies and photography.

Just the same as black and white is ART,, color is PORN.

Only small independent company's? And they all used film because the Director was influenced by an audience who didn't even know the movie was being made? I doubt the 'large mass of people' (I guess you mean cinema goers) know or care what medium was used, but they may well have found enjoyment from the visual effect.

A list of movies released in 2023 and shot on film https://www.imdb.com/list/ls564569703/

and Kodak's promo for film https://www.kodak.com/en/motion/page/shot-on-film/

Aren't you glad we’re intelligent enough to know better even though it’s artificial…🥸

IF that be the case,  why is it that with proper time and trial and error, a normal 35mm negative can be blown up to3x5',, and a normal 120 negative can be blown up to 8'x10 with no loss of quality to the human eye.  But the 16"x18" image created by my digital cameras processor CANNOT be enlarged without ending up looking like a reitculated negative?

i cant even really enlarge them. my digital does three sizes, and they just dont turn out if enlarged. Its said but it sucks. But movie poster size images arent TOO bad..

Doubt 35mm film can be blown up to 3’x5’. How can 35mm film be enlarged to 3’x5’ without digital processing…🎞️

Ever watch the movie Blow Up (1966)? Ever seen pictures of The Family of Man photo installation (1955)?

Simple tool called a horizontal/bench enlarger.

https://heilandelectronic.de/enlarger/lang:en

In 1981 (long before digital), I had a 35mm Kodachrome slide enlarged to 5' x 3.3' (60 x 40 inches) for my wall. Lab rephotographed the slide onto 4x5 color neg film, and then printed that negative with their bench enlarger onto really big color photo paper.

My late uncle's former vacation home had a wall-sized print from a 35mm film photo, of the original view from the front steps - created before 1957 (the year I first saw it, at age 4). Still there under new owners in 2003.

BTW - the next question will probably be "Where does one find (chemical darkroom) photographic paper large enough to make 40" darkroom prints?"

And the answer is right here: 42" by any length up to 384." 😉

That’s why digital is less expensive…📷

Pictures to the wall
Now we are here on page 18 and I am increasingly getting the feeling that for most people, pictures are an annoying justification for their great technical toys.

I so demand: Pictures to the wall and let the cams out.*

*this works for both kinds
