i switched from leica m10 to Q3 28 half a year ago after having photographed for years with M + summilux 28 and 50. i am very impressed with the Q3 and find the AF and IBS and Viewfinder a big improvement. the only thing i miss is the DOF of the summilux 50. and that makes me probably switch back to an m12 or possibly the m13. but since the arrival of the q3 43 i doubt whether i can not work better with 2 x q3. i think i then also have a nice DOF at 43 and ultimately much cheaper than a new m12 + lux 50 and 28. moreover then always a spare camera and the ibs, af and such on both cameras. does anyone have experience with

No direct experience; given your comments, the Q solution looks good.

It's worth remembering, though, that if you choose to crop to get longer focal length equivalents, then your image resolutions drops. With an interchangeable lens camera, using a longer focal length lens has no impact on resolution.

Thanks. the last 8 years i only used 50 and 28  ( 28 as prime) so i dont think the resolution drop will be anreal issue .  and in fact you have the same resolution drop when you crop with an m with 28 or 50

Yes - my comment is only relevant if you want to use longer FL lenses.

I actually have all 3 cameras including an M10M and Q2M.  I think the Q3 and Q3 43 is an excellent combo.  I used the Q3 in Paris and the Q3 43 in Provence.  Perfect combo.  The Q3 43 has nice DOF options - better than the Q3.  And nowadays you have the blur tool in Adobe LR Classic.  Works fairly well if you want to enhance shallow DOF.

I have both a Q3 and a Q343. I am very happy with that combo. They work the same and replace a 24-70 in other brands - for me. I also have an Leica MD - which I use in a completely different way.

Whether I will ever sell my M is probably doubtful.

But it is the Q3 that I use the most, followed by the Q343.

The M is collecting dust at the moment.

The Q328 can well replace the M with a 28 mm.

The M with a 50 mm summilux is something special when you hit focus…

Not even close to the same effect

Hi Everyone!

Same as you, I mostly (%85-95) use 28mm and 50mm focal lengths. I have m7 and q2m reporter, and had m10-r before. Sometimes I also needed IBIS and EVF (AF as well but not too much right now), therefore I sold m10-r and bought sl2-s reporter. I mean, its wonderful camera, I could use easily my summicron 28mm and summilux 50mm with great viewfinder and ibis option (especially for 50mm). Also sl2-s gives me opportunity to use AF with its sl lenses if I will need. So far, I am happy with my decision. When I miss m camera, I shot with my m7 :)

About q3 and q3 43, I don't have any experience, but I love my q2m reporter (I had m10m, changed with it). Great camera with many possibilities as sl2-s.

Another possibility and one I’m thinking of is a SL3 plus Leica M-Adapter L - I have seen reports that M lens manual focus works really well using the SL EVF

I will never quit the M line, at least as long as my eyes allow me to shoot the M.

In digital, I own a M10M and a Q2 reporter.

My thinking right now is to keep the M10M (just perfect for me), and will at some point sell the Q2 (the reporter finish I love prevents me from doing so for the time being ;) ) and probably buy a SL3 with a 2/50 or 2/35 (non APO to be as light as possible), and use it with its 35 and although with my M Lenses.

It allows me to keep a camera for rainy days ans with AF and enjoy the M as much as possible.

As for the original question - what is Better leica M with lux 28 + 50 or two leica Q3 ( 28+43)?  I have to say my choice would be the M camera with 28 and 50 Summilux lenses.

I have a Q2 - it has its place in the scheme of things.  I use it frequently when I want to go with one camera one lens kit.   It is a very nice and very capable camera - but IMHO, the Q cameras are not a replacement for the M camera.  For serious photographic endeavors, I always gravitate to my M cameras and lenses.

My first question to your title question is:

Do you prefer AF over the MF of the M? Does this matter to you since many Q shooters use MF on their AF Q's? IBIS of sorts, a fixed lens which helps one just shoot the moment instead of fumbling mentally or physically with lens changes, nice EVF experience and of course diopter control at the touch of a button..

Many never talk about the convenience of having the fold out LCD for low level or shooting at waist level.

The Q and the M are two totally different machines.  They require two very different ways of working and two different approaches to image making.

Pressing the button and getting a photo?
Leica M is just manual only, Leica Q is AF + M with superb EVF for manual focusing, which is pain in the butt for eyeglasses users with M.

Leica Q3 + Q3 43 is just an excellent option for people who want simplicity and medium format cropping power.
