AKW Posted December 12, 2024 Share #1 ย Posted December 12, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm a new SL2 user and my first AF lens for it is the Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 DG DN OS. The lens has an AFL button (AF lock), but I haven't gotten it to work yet. Do you have any advice, or is this feature missing from the SL2? Thanks for your help! LocalHero1953 Posted December 12, 2024 Share #2 ย Posted December 12, 2024 (edited) I don't have that lens, but do have the Sigma 85 DG DN f/1.4. The switch is a MF/AF one: when in the AF position my SL2-S treats it as if it were an AF lens like a Leica L-mount lens. When in the MF position, the AF options on the body are unavailable, and focusing is only by the lens ring. Does yours not work in that way?ย Edited December 12, 2024 by LocalHero1953
jaapv Posted December 12, 2024 Share #3 ย Posted December 12, 2024 On my lens it works out of the box. I rarely if ever use it though as I prefer to use the camera to do so. If it does not work the problem is with the lens as the switch works independently from the camera attached. It cannot be disabled from the camera.ย
AKW Posted December 12, 2024 Author Share #4 ย Posted December 12, 2024 Is your camera an SL2 too? The Sigma manual says that not all cameras support AFL button, but they donยดt tell which ones... Another good option would be "thumb focus", do you know if that's possible? (By thumb focus I mean activating the autofocus with some button or joystick on the back of the camera, rather than the shutter button)
jaapv Posted December 12, 2024 Share #5 ย Posted December 12, 2024 Well, yes mine is an SL2S and it works on my SL601 too and on my CL so, whilst it is possible that the SL2 is an exception, it is rather unlikely. Ask Sigma.ย ย Back Button Focus? Yes you can assign an Fn button. I use pushing the joystick.ย

On the SL2, if the lens switch is set to MF I still can use the back button to autofocus. Half press of the shutter button does not work for auto focus. I do not use the AFL button, and it does not seem to have any purpose.
NickT Posted December 12, 2024 Share #8 ย Posted December 12, 2024 Welcome, dear visitor! Here is a screen shot from the instruction sheet that comes with the lens!ย I have the Sigma 20mm DG DN lens. This has a MF/AF switch (whose use is obvious) and also has an AFL button underneath. Which is a similar arrangment to the 70-200. As far as I can tell on my SL3 this button does indeed have no purpose as indicated in point 2 above. LocalHero1953 Posted December 12, 2024 Share #9 ย Posted December 12, 2024 I'm a bit worried that some roombhates can whostomachize the function of my AF-L button. ๐
NickT Posted December 12, 2024 Share #10 ย Posted December 12, 2024 I have just been doing some more experimenting and it seems this button fulfils the same function as the joystick. That is in AF mode you hold it down while simultaneously half pressing he shutter button it locks focus so you can recompose.
