New Leica codename "Warp" - is it the SL3-S? (+ list of codenames)

I really hope the SL3-S is not based on the sensor of the S5IIX. Not a bad sensor, but I would like to see a stacked BSI with decent rolling shutter for video (sub 10 ms) and the ability to do 4k 120 fps 10 bit 4.2.2 no crop, which won't be possible with the S5IIX sensor.

The S5ii came out two years ago, so we probably won't get the exact same sensor. My guess is that we'll get the sensor that Panasonic is developing for the S1h (cine 24MP) replacement.

I hope Leica brings more telephoto lens for that 30fps camera body, and better AF.

You mean like the 70-200 by Leica and Sigma, the 60-600 by Sigma, the 150-600 by Sigma, the 100-400 by Leica and Sigma and the Panasonic range?

Quite possible. Although the present one is doing rather well for video in the S5iiX I am told.

*Provided you don't need:

To move the camera quickly while filming (rolling shutter)

4K 60 without a crop

The S5II/S5IIX has gotten a lot of praise for its value. If you try and sell a camera with similar specs for $5K, then it might be a tough sell.

I do agree very much. I have the S5ii and it's one of my favorite cameras, and price considered, one of the best. Getting a Leica version with a matching price tag ... I'm not sure what the point of that is, market-wise. Seems like the SL3s box just has to be ticked somehow. I'm personally more excited about Pana's version of the SL3 (S1Rii), but that's reportedly been delayed significantly. In any case, we'll be spoiled for choice come mid-2025 and that's a good thing.

I guess it will be what it always is, a premium cost for the Leica-specific stuff: IP-rated weather sealing, external design/ergonomics, menu design, and great IQ/integration with M lenses.  I do think that's a more difficult upsell for video shooters than it is to stills shooters, though, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

The S5iiX has higher video specifications than the S5ii.

Yes, they're firmware/feature differences geared toward filmmakers. All-Intra codec, etc. Sensor readout and everything else is the same.

Hopefully Leica brings over open gate recording and anamorphic support from the S5II cameras.

But it seems that the stabilizer is on steadycam level.

S5II and S5IIX are supposed to have the same IBIS. And their IBIS is very good from what I remember. For handheld video, I mostly do slow panning, so IBIS has been good for me for a while: R5, SL2, SL2-S, Zf, S5IIX, etc. I never had the other cameras at the same time as the S5IIX, but anecdotally the S5IIX and the R5 were the most smooth of all for panning. The S5IIX probably exceeds all the others for walking motions, run & gun, etc.

They are the same camera. There's even a paid firmware upgrade for the S5ii which unlocks some (not all) features of the X. The S5ii stabilization with both systems engaged is on the level of a good action cam, you could hand it to anyone with a 16-35 or similar attached and get usable footage, even if both camera and subject are moving (as long as it's not fast laterally ;)).

The X has E-stabilization which the standard does not have. 200 Euro for the upgrade.lnvludes the other Video extras.

The standard S5ii has all the stabilization modes: optical, electronic, and boost. I use it almost daily. In fact, I have them all arranged next to each other in my Q menu setup for video:

This is Leica we are talking about. Value-for-money isn't really a consideration, given that the SL3 is the most expensive FF MILC on the market right now (over an R1, A1II, and Z9) -- unless of course you count the M11 series, which Leica also makes.

I agree. I was just saying the value is why the S5IIX was so popular. A Leica version of that camera will have to rely on the usual SL line robustness and ease of use arguments.
