Thumbs Up for M7

Um...

I'm really not being funny, but why? I can see the sense of the Thumbs-Up (which I think is a stroke of brilliance) on an M8, in order to improve secure handling, but on an M7 you have the wind-on lever that the Thumbs-up "gives" to the M8.

Do you use your M7 with a winder of some description? That's the only thing I can possibly think of?

Regards,

Bill

I can't see any benefit of the Thumbs Up an an M7 either, unless the M7 has a permanently attached winder. Actually, with a Leicavit or Tom's Rapidwinder, one could leave the camera's advance lever tucked in - the Thumbs up will improve the handling. I would definitely not use it with a 'bare' M7- if anything, it would be in the way of the advance lever.

On an M8 the Thumbs Up is a joy to use.

Jan

Twin shoe :D

One for the ext. VF and the other for... levelling bubble? Flash? Another VF? :D

One for the 21mm finder (15mm Heliar), the other for the 28mm (21mm ASPH Elmarit) for the times when lens and finder changing may be too time consuming.

I did this before Tim the Thumbs Up Man anounced that a 'shoed' version was on the drawing board. Had I known, I probably would not have bothered and waited for Tim's version.

The LFI website has this about the M7 and the Thumbs Up:

The small cut-out on the Thumbs Up serves as the entry point for the flash sync jacks on the M4 and M6 – though not for the M7 and MP, on which the jacks are slightly lower. In this case, the device will protrude by about 1.5 mm, but that doesn’t make the grip any less secure.

We were just asking if anyone had any experience with it on the M7 since the pictures make it appear to allow for better thumb placement and the wind lever has a hard edge. The question was not really a big deal.

Peter,

Had your original query been as specific as your follow-up, I would have answered this way:

"On my M7, the flash outlet does indeed sit slightly below the opening of the Thumbs Up. On the MP and M6 non-TTL however, the opening and the flash outlet match precisely. I would not use the Thumbs Up on the M7 or the M6TTL, because the 1.5mm stand off might make the Thumbs Up wobble in the shoe - it does not slide in fully, as it is intended to do on the M8"

Indeed - not a big deal.

Best,

Jan

I just came across this link to the 'thumbs up' and they do indeed suggest that it can be used for film M's as well as the M8

But looking at the photo of it on an M6, surely its just going to get in the way (unless you were using a winder). To use the film advance would otherwise be really fiddly.
