HELLO everyone and Happy New Year,

As i posted few week ago i have an old summar 50 f.2 that perform amazing bw with my M8.

now i'd like some advice, the front lens is uncoating, so sometimes, the image has some flair (?) on the upper side, i think to put a coated filter (maybe UV) to fight this and a lens shade.

Does anyone has some suggestions for this ?

Do you think will be a good idea?

Thanks in advance

Andrea

HELLO Andrea and Happy New Year too,

I do have an old Summar from 1935 and i use it from time to time on a M8 as well.

First, i have put an adhesive band from "Dymo" to avoid an unfortunate collapse of the lens.

Then, to use it mostly wide open, a ND 2x E34 filter is mounted on,

as well as a FOOKH shade, originally made for Summaron - Elmar 35mm, which is much smaller than the SOOMP hood, made for this Summar.

BTW a ND. filter will be a good idea

I think is difficult to find a hood made today that fits the Summar, but a FOOKH as Philippe's is not so difficult to find, nor costly: at the moment , Leicashop of Wien has 3 FOOKH for sale, at 70 Euros each... they have also a pair of FIKUS (at 150 Euros) that can be an interesting alternative... an adjustable hood 3,5-5-13,5 cm, goood if you have some other "oldie" for use.

Grazie per la dritta Luigi,

I think my choiche will go for the FIKUS because i will use a longer shader on M8

anyway for instance no more oldies on my bag...

Adding a filter will add another two glass/air surfaces and will only make flare worse, albeit with a good filter only marginally so but every glass/air surface will add to the problem. A lens hood will probably help.

Andrea,

Leica people usually like to use what they already have, and adapt it to new applications. A #13154 (SOOGZ) adaptor ring will let you use any E39 filter or shade on your Summar (also Elmar, Hektor, etc.). I use a SOOGZ with a #12504 Shade to adapt Series VII Filters to older lenses.
