NZDavid Posted January 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have long been a fan of 100 ISO slide film, but occasionally faster is handy, so long as the grain is not too bad, but especially if there are no garish color casts. I like Fuji 400 NH, which seems to handle different lighting with aplomb. Are there any other specimens, slide or neg, that people favor? How about the new Fujichrome? I use negative film, and for me nothing beats Reala. I'd rather use a tripod than compromise on that, if I possibly can. But, if I'm on holiday, with just one slower zoom lens, and no tripod, then Superia Extra 400 (whatever it's called - I mean the newest Fuji 400 negative film) is the next best thing. But it's not Reala!

sbelyaev Posted January 2, 2008 Share #5 Posted January 2, 2008 I just developed a roll of provia 400x. Overall it looks like Astia.
Mark Antony Posted January 2, 2008 Share #6 Posted January 2, 2008 Provia 400X is the finest grain slide film available. Here is a mini review (scroll down the page). Photo Utopia Fuji 400X mini review Mark
JBA Posted January 2, 2008 Share #7 Posted January 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just loaded my first roll of Provia yesterday after finishing my first roll of Velvia 100. Should make an interesting comparison.
NZDavid Posted January 3, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted January 3, 2008 Looks like it's definitely worth giving Provia 400X a whirl. I'd also be keen to see some pictures. Excellent that Fuji is still bringing out new emulsions, I hope Kodak will, too.
sbelyaev Posted January 3, 2008 Share #9 Posted January 3, 2008 I looked at my slides (now projected on a screen) again and I should admit that I was wrong. It is not like astia, it is much better. Skin tones are good. Colors are clean, bright and neutral (similar to Velvia 100f). Grain is very fine. Contrast is normal (about the same as contrast of astia). Resolution is about the same as it of Agfa RSX100. Overall Agfa RSX100 looked somewhat similar. It is an excellent film. It will not replace velvia 50, but I'd use it instead any other slide films.
