I have the flash but use it on the SL. As it is a round flash, vignetting for sure will happen as the light falls off in a round shape.

If you are worried that the flash itself will obstruct the view and therefore cause a vignette, this all depends how you position the camera in the flash. The mount is rather versatile, so one can position the camera far enough in front.

this will work on a tripod, handheld will not be comfortable.

You don't really need high power for ringflash when used for macro.  Many have a guidenumber of 8 or 16. High-power ringflashes are mostly used in portrait and model photography, and those are available in LED as well.
