I migrated from M to Q (why does everything sound like a Bond film?).

The main reason was plain frustration with the M. I was mainly shooting with the 28mm Summicron, but since I wear glasses it was impractical to frame accurately with the optical viewfinder. So I tried to use the EVF, and the damn thing would just repeatedly lock up on me at the worst possible moment. I also got fed up with sensor muck and dust accumulating in the M's viewfinder. I have had none of these problems with the Q series.

What I liked about the M was the combination of 28mm Summicron and 50LUX ASPH. I did not really get on with the 35LUX ASPH, which IMO had a very rough background focus and poor image quality at the edges of the frame, and while the 21mm Elmarit was spectacular, it again fell foul of the EVF problems. When the M11 came out with the same EVF problems and a much higher price tag, I decided to replace the M with a combination of a Fuji GFX system for general use (in particular, the 55mm f1.7 is superb) and the Q for something more lightweight. No regrets at all.

I still keep a small M system for use with film and 35/50mm. IMO, the M shines when shooting film with medium focal lengths, but is less than ideal for digital where expectations for image quality are much higher.

why?

For me, the M is an extension of my hand, I don't feel like this camera is a separate tool. This is due to its compact size and transparent viewfinder, which does not tear me away from reality, unlike the EVF, in which the colors and contrasts do not look like real ones.

My first Leica (an M-2R) was issued to me by the US Army in South Vietnam.  I thoroughly enjoyed using it and reluctantly surrendered it to a South Vietnamese photographer when my unit was relieved by the ARVN.  When I got out of the Army, I couldn't afford a Leica and settled for Nikons over the years.  When I retired, I treated myself to a brand new M240MP with 28mm, 50mm, 90mm and 135mm lenses.  I've thoroughly enjoyed using that kit.  When in Portugal last spring, I spied the Leica store in Porto and went in to have a look at the Q3.  The salesman took his time showing me its nuances and even let me take it outside and shoot a few photos.  I really liked it so, when I got home, I ordered one.  At age 77, my vision isn't what it used to be and focusing the M240 had become hit or miss.  The Q3 eliminated that issue for me and, now, I'm practicing my hobby more and more.  I just sold my M kit so someone else could enjoy it as much as I did.

I agree that the M series feels great in terms of build quality, but partly that's also psychological because you've paid such a high price for it. I have worked with the M's for 17 years and with the Q3 for half a year. In terms of ease of use, the q3 is really a lot better because of its V viewfinder and IS and AF.

I don't like the EVF on the Q3 43, it has too  narrow dynamic range and it takes my brain a while to adjust to the artificial, unrealistic image, so I only use the external screen to stay in touch with reality. I only need the autofocus for taking pictures of my kids or when I only have one hand free, otherwise I use manual focus, and it's much more convenient on the M11.

I did!

sold all my digital M`s. Kept the analoge ones.

Q3 28 + SL2 are now my goto cameras.

Maybe I sell some M-Lenses and buy the Q3/48

I`m back on the M track when some "digital helpers" for focusing will be implemented.

I have the Q43 and SL3, which I use with SL and M lenses.  As good as the SL lenses are, I prefer the weight and use of the M lenses.  I don't shoot sports or wildlife that much, so am happy taking that bit longer to focus, but if they come out with an M that has an EVF of equivalent or better resolution to the SL3 I will be first in the queue.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am considering selling my M11-P also after using the Q43. The only thing holding is the look of the photo from the M11-p, wonder if the Q can take a similar look of the M, as that's the only thing holding me back, apart from that the Q43 is all around versatile camera with excellent image quality.

Just some comparison from both the camera with trying to follow the same setting, the M just has that classic Leica look to it, making it difficult to see lol. The first picture of both the pics is the M11-P.

I bought the Q3 43 and fell in love with Leica... and soon bought the M11-D with 28mm Summicron.   When on a photo walk, I love the M11... and the D aspect even more, waiting to get home to see what I really got.  I took the M11 to a Thanksgiving Day parade last week and it was fantastic.  Since getting the M11, most of my snaps have been with that camera.  However, my son's college graduation occurs in 2 weeks and I have no doubt I will be taking the Q3 43.

  • I want the best chance of sharp portraits, with a high success rate of in-focus shots
  • I want to lend to others, put all in <auto>, and get snaps of me with my son
  • I really want to enjoy the graduation vs the photographic experience of the graduation
  • The longer length 43mm may open photo opportunities (vs 28mm) since I have not yet added a 50mm to the M11

Today I slapped everything into <auto> and walked around the house snapping photos just to see how well it could work handing to a friend to take pictures.  I feel more confident bringing the Q3 43 to this event than the M11-D... with time, that perspective may evolve.

After buying the Q3 43, I deliberately left the M11 alone for two months to better understand and feel the difference. And all this time I missed the M11. Today I picked up my M11-P to shoot. It's so great to use it again. The Q3 43 is a great camera, but the M11 is an absolute joy!
