hellobrandonscott Posted November 7, 2024 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2024 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for opinions on what to do here... So it sounds like I have a loose ball bearing rolling around the inside of my APO 35 SL. It's (of course) out of warranty by 6 months. I'm a wedding photographer and use this lens for basically everything all the time. Being without it for a repair period is going to be a major inconvenience. I could... 1. Live with it until my last wedding of the season (12/15) and then send it to repair. Calendar is pretty empty January-February. 2. Send it immediately and sort of just rely on the 28SL to fill that need as a temporary solution. My logic for #1: This could've been going on for months and I might only now just have realized it. I've done a few shoots since discovering the noise and there's zero affect on IQ. And also I'm assuming any risk of it doing damage internally is low, thinking it probably would've done so already. I have a 35 KOB I could use in a pinch, but the lack of AF for some key/quick moments would be a pain. And also, if you know that lens, it has a look about it that's not ideal for some portions of a wedding. Video of the issue Thoughts? Opinions? Advertisement Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Hi hellobrandonscott, Take a look here Sounds like a loose ball bearing in my 35 APO lens.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted November 7, 2024 Share #2 Posted November 7, 2024 (edited) For me, it would be not worth the risk, and I'd send it for repair now. I would worry about a ball bearing getting into the lens cell, hitting a glass surface, or getting caught in the focus mechanism. In any case, I would not be convinced that Leica would repair it within your Jan-Feb window, so the sooner it goes off the better. hellobrandonscott Posted November 7, 2024 Author Share #3 Posted November 7, 2024 Appreciate the feedback. Hopefully doesn't cost a dumb amount of money to get it repaired. Of course it's *just* out of warranty too.
BernardC Posted November 7, 2024 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2024 I would contact Leica NJ now. You never know, they may be able to help in some way. At the very least they can probably prepare your request so it goes smoothly in a month. 2 minutes ago, LocalHero1953 said: In any case, I would not be convinced that Leica would repair it within your Jan-Feb window, so the sooner it goes off the better. They repaired my S-006 over Christmas many years ago. I sent it off in mid-December and got it back early in the new year. That doesn't mean it's a normal thing, but it's not like the month of August when nothing seems to happen in Germany.
jaapv Posted November 7, 2024 Share #5 Posted November 7, 2024 Or you could buy the Sigma 35 Art as a general backup before you send the lens in. And a supplementary 1.4 lens.

hellobrandonscott Posted November 8, 2024 Author Share #8 Posted November 8, 2024 Following up - my local Leica store ended up loaning me a 35 APO for the weekend and then Leica USA are shipping out a 24-90 to borrow while it's in repair. SO thankful for that. They definitely went above and beyond. 3
