dclark211 Posted November 3, 2024 Share #1  Posted November 3, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) What are the jpeg B&W images like in the regular Q2. I'm a pro Architectural photographer (Sony) getting close to retirement and my real passion is B&W photography. I'm considering a monochrome camera (possibly a used M11-M as well). I really like shooting B&W film with my vintage Minolta system. I'm a big "get it right in camera" guy that film forces one to be. I like that idea with a Monochrome camera (yes I realize one can really edit up a monochrome raw file if they choose). Just curious...thanks for the response
Advertisement Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Hi dclark211, Take a look here Thinking of a Q2-M I have one question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 3, 2024 Share #2  Posted November 3, 2024 I’ve always found that my darkroom work was as important as the film out of the camera. Never thought much of Walmart prints… The Monochrom files have huge potential which cannot be matched by OOC jpgs, However Leica does do an acceptable job in their firmware.
dclark211 Posted November 3, 2024 Author Share #3  Posted November 3, 2024 I agree. I have not developed in a Darkroom in many years so I send the film off to a couple of labs that also digitize. I'm now thinking renting a Monochrom camera and see how I like.
jaapv Posted November 3, 2024 Share #4  Posted November 3, 2024 Oh - You'll like it, no doubt about that, but it will draw you down the rabbit hole of postprocessing and printing your best shots 🙃 - If only by Silver Efex Pro. The tonal values that you can get out of the cameras are amazing.
BrettWayne Posted November 4, 2024 Share #5  Posted November 4, 2024 (edited) Perhaps consider an M11m or used m10m if you’re really into black and white - as a bonus these cameras have built in perspective control which you can see while shooting. Albeit not a shift lens but eliminates post processing. Note if you’re new to rangefinders you’ll likely need an EVF.  Q2 monochrom also a bargain these days - plus has AF. I went from Q2M to M10m and this week I’m trading up to M11m along with a Q3/43 for family & travel stuff. Retiring my M3 for an M-A too. If money wasn’t a concern I’d keep all of them. Here’s a nice write up on Leica perspective control: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/hands-on-review/hands-on-with-leicas-new-perspective-control-function-for-m10-cameras Edited November 4, 2024 by BrettWayne
Miltz Posted November 5, 2024 Share #6  Posted November 5, 2024 The Q2 monochrome is so much better than the Q2 in BW mode. High ISO is so much better. If you love BW get Q2 monochrome. But…. There’s always a but. Personally I love the Q3 in BW mode and having the option for color can’t be beat. The Q3 sensor is way better than the Q2. If you’re interested in a Q3 reach out.
