To help me identify .jpg files from my D-Lux4 I set it to name them L4000001 etc, so that they were easy to tell from files derived from my two M8s that were L1000001 and L2000001 etc.  In the past, helpful instructions on this forum showed me how to do this.  My old D-Lux4 is dying so I have just got an 8 and want its files to come out as L8... for instant identification.  The previous procedure (to re-name file and directory) is not working (it just makes a new 100LEICA directory) and I wondered if any new D-Lux8 owners have had any interest or tried to change file numbering.  I am not anticipating taking millions of photos so I don't mind the number 8... being rather high!  Suggestions gratefully received.  Thanks, Matthew

It appears that the only change you can make is to the first letter of the filename. Given that you want to be able to quickly identify files made by your D-Lux 8, you might consider changing the L to an E, for "Eight".

See page 74 of the pdf of the Leica D-Lux 8 manual:

EDIT FILE NAMES

Select Camera Settings  in the main menu

Select  Edit File Name

A keyboard submenu is displayed.

The input line contains the factory setting “L” as the

first letter of the file name. Only this letter can be

changed.

Enter a letter of your choice (see p. 50)

Confirm

Notes

The change to a file name applies to all subsequent

files or until a new change is made. The sequential

number will not be affected; but it will be reset when

a new folder is created.

During a reset to factory settings, the first letter will

always be reset to “L”.

Lower case letters are unavailable.

Thanks for suggestions.  At the moment I am using LightRoom (5.7) to get photos imported into folder by date but only create minimal previews.  Then exit LR and go to that folder, run Windows Power ReName to change L1... to L8...

Then back to LR, remove the photos just imported (!) and then Import / Add to Catalogue from the folder they are already in.  A bit cumbersome really.  This has to be done in the correct order or you get duplicates eg L8000137-2.jpg and so on.  If I spent some time to learn programming then I could do the import and make a dated folder (eg 2024-11-08) and rename all at once.  I looked for a utility to do this.

I was glad I had bought a brand new SD card with UHS-II connections to match the camera, and a corresponding card reader.  They download in a second.  And I am very pleased with the handling and the pictures.  Here is dusk on a foggy day at the hydro dam at Lairg, Scottish Highlands.

Found a quicker way.  Set computer to open Adobe Bridge when SD card attached.  All imported into a folder I've named D-Lux 8.  Then run bulk re-name in Bridge from L1... to L8...  After that open LR and Import/Move photos from that folder (leaving it empty for next download) and arrange by date folders as usual.
