I am asking about the functionality and performance if using different iPad for Leica Fotos and/or LR.

The first level variation is iPad Pro vs. iopad air vs iPad vs iPad mini. The second level variation is iPad OS version.

I am asking because I am using gen 8 iPad. I used Leica fotos for a while then quit, due to the reliability. But more importantly I prefer LRC to LR. upload the flash memory to Mac is not a big deal, then I am on the road.

Recently I want to try iPad again. I can upload the picture from memory card to iPad through lightning connected memory card reader, or through Leica fotos.

Do you see major difference that prefers the more expensive iPad (iPad Pro, the larger one)? for either Leica fotos or Adobe LR/PS?

it comes down to file size.  with my 16-26 mp cameras any relatively recent iPad is just fine.  with a 40mp SL my M1 iPad Pro was ok but clearly at its limits.  if you’re dealing with 60mp files I would go latest and greatest pro.  all of this is for single or small batches on import.  you can always get away with less, just a question of how much patience you have.

I have the 2021 version of the iPad mini and use it often with Lightroom when travelling, with SL2-S, SL2 and M11 (60mp files). It handles importing and editing brilliantly (and in some cases faster than my Macbook). I'm not sure what type of work John in Nassau was doing that put his iPad 'at its limits' - I get occassional slight lag when editing but no real issues (I am not questioning the experience, just have not shared it 🙂)

I still prefer the Macbook for the noise reduction and enhance features, plus the ability to make copies of images for different edits. Also the Classic version is IMO much better for batch operations, cataloging, tagging etc.

I don't bother with Leica Fotos unless I want to quickly upload an image for immediate review/sharing - if you are working with Lightroom it is IMO just an unecessary step.

sorry for the delayed response.  it’s really just a matter of processing time.  of course I pretty much live with my iPad so god only knows how many apps are open in the background.  either that or I’m just impatient!

I have an iPad Mini with the A17 Pro processor and definitely prefer to import from SD card via USB-C dongle. WiFi transfer takes too long when it comes to moving multiple DNG files. I chose an iPad Mini so that it'll fit into my 6L bag with an M camera with lens, and 2 more M lenses; which makes for a super compact kit for being able to shoot and process photos on-the-go.

The iPad runs LR smoothly and these days, even the "AI assisted" subject and sky masking tools work pleasantly quickly.

In a pinch, I also use the same dongle and import into my Google Pixel 7 Pro and edit via LR as well, though it doesn't run as smoothly (the sliders are greyed out for about 5sec when I swipe to the next photo).

I have not edited photos on LRC on a laptop or desktop machine in a year and quite frankly, I think I can really get used to it.

Regarding the Fotos app, I tend to use it either for remote live view and control of my M10, or for transferring JPEGs or just 1 or 2 DNGs at a time.
