Not being anything other than a casual observer of fungi, I have no idea if these are unusual examples. Can't recall seeing (dead) birches sprouting fungi up their whole length before.

I posed a question elsewhere on the web about the fungi seen above and received the answer:-

It is a bracket fungus called Birch Polypore (Fomitopsis betulina) a very common fungus on Birch trees. Infects trees through wounds/damage and eventually kills them. It continues to produce fruiting bodies (the brackets) long after the tree dies.

So now I know! 😀
