I don't think right now it's possible to format, but one method to delete photos from Internal Storage other than the FOTOS app is the following procedure:

1. Connect M11-D with USB-C cable to your Mac (it needs to be in PTP but PTP mode is the default setting, you can check with the function button, 3 clicks to see in the viewfinder what the current mode is)

2. Turn on the M11-D

3. If prompted, allow camera to connect. (see screenshot below)

4. Open "Image Capture" on your Mac, this application is from Apple and installed by default on every Mac for many years. Depending on language it might have a different name. When opened you should see all photos (note that internal storage and SD storage are shown as one, so you cannot differentiate between internal and SD.) Select photos you want to delete and click the trash can, then confirm deletion.

5. Then you can remove the cable and turn off the M11-D again.

Thanks, this works perfectly fine on my Macbook. I could thus delete the photos from the internal memory.

Has anyone managed to format the internal memory in the meantime? When connecting to my Macbook I don't see any options to format the internal storage, because it neither appears in the finder nor in the hard drive utility program.

The reason why I'm asking is that even though I deleted all photos from the internal memory, the camera shows only 399 shots available which is ridiculous for a 256GB storage (the SD card was removed when deleting and testing).

Notably, I deleted about 600 photos of about 75MB each when the camera indicated that the internal memory was full which is not much better.

Thus, I'm wondering whether formatting the internal storage would help to increase the usable capacity. I would have expected that it should be sufficient for about more than 3000 photos in full resolution DNG. 🤔🤔

@Robert Blanko just checking if you made a type-o with “399’. It should say 999 if you deleted all them images on the internal storage.  Let’s hope that the rumored next firmware update is true and offers us the feature to format both the internal and SD cards via Fotos https://leicarumors.com/2024/12/10/new-leica-firmware-updates-coming-soon-m11-m11-m-m11-p-m11-d-d-lux-8-q3-q343-sl3-and-sl2-sl2-s-cameras.aspx/

No, the 399 is not a typo. I know that the indication is 999 if it the number of available shots exceeds 999. But without the SD card the indication is indeed 399. As mentioned, I deleted about 600 photos when the internal memory was allegedly full (there is a dedicated "full" indication and I saw a text message in the Visoflex that I connected for a wide angle lens).

@Robert Blanko that’s interesting. Just checked my M11-D (DNG only set to DNG+JPG on In=SD), deleted all images on internal drive (using image capture on Mac OS), removed my SD card, turned my camera on and it still shows 999.  ☹️ Looks like you might have hit a bug to report; maybe someone else or Leica can repro. Perhaps once we get the ability to format the internal drive, this might just resolve itself?

You probably already saw it, but just in case: the new FOTOS app update today allows you to format internal storage.

I have just installed the new firmware and now the counter says "999" for the available shots when I remove the SD card. Immediately before, it displayed "339". Thus, it looks like the bug is now fixed even without formatting the internal memory. Fingers crossed!

But I was puzzled that I could not install the firmware update via the Fotos app like last time - or maybe I simply did not find the proper button. But also on the Leica Website they only provide instructions for the update via the SD card.

For some reason it can sometimes take a bit of time for the update to show in the app. The update showed for my m11s right away but took a long time for it to show for my Q3. Not sure if there is a way to make it show up.

It actually showed up after I updated the Fotos app to the newest version which now also supports formatting the SD card as well as the internal storage. But it disappeared shortly afterwards - supposedly because I had already installed the new firmware on the camera.
