UK technician to clean lenses and service on Televid 77 (non-APO version) Angled Spotting Scope.

I think my Televid 77 could do with a clean. Even on very clear days, the view is slightly hazy. I have read that this is not uncommon on the Televid 77 Spotter Scopes and that they usually benefit considerably for a clean and service. Has anyone had good experience with a UK technician in this field? I am not sure a regular binocular man would be the correct choice as their work commonly revolves around convergence, rather than acuity, although on older prismatic binoculars, they may have to clean the prism surfaces but these are often uncoated so can be cleaned more simply or vigorously than the coated lenses on my Televid 77. The alternative would be to part exchange it for a Televid 82.

You could start with Leica Mayfair. They do/did have technicians on site, but what they can do seems to be a moving feast.

I would probably be cheaper part exchanging for a Televid 82 than getting Mayfair to service the 77.

Wilson, If you're still considering a service / repair, Tony Kay ( OptRep in Selsey) is a very experienced technican who has serviced / repaired four of my vintage binoculars and also offers to service Leica spotting scopes.

IME his £charges are reasonable. https://www.opticalrepairs.com

Dunk,

Today I cleaned the lens at the front of the ocular and the one inside the body of the 77, with Zeiss fluid and a cotton bud. A surprising amount of dirt came off so I wonder if the last owner was a smoker. The front element was also not as clean as it might be. The 77 now seems a fair bit clearer. I had this with my 80-200 Vario Elmar R lens, where I had Will van Manen clean it. It even smelt of stale tobacco and was much improved when it came back. He also refastened the damping link for focusing, which made that much less hit and miss. I often wonder what the cameras my father used regularly were like (his IIIa and Super Ikonta C), given he was a chain smoker until he had a heart attack in 1957. I only have his less used cameras (IIf and Contax RF) and they don't seem to be affected. I think I made a mistake buying the 77. I should have bought the 77-APO.
