Street Portrait Photography (Open Thread)

Street portraits are a real challenge for most photographers. The vast majority of photographers don't manage this step. Certainly because this type of photography doesn't appeal to everyone, but to be honest it's also because very few people can bring themselves to do it. I am very sure that there are quite a few photographers who have stood somewhere in the city for hours trying to approach people and ask for a photo, but have not been able to overcome this.

But it is also a supreme discipline in photography because the photographer often only has a few seconds to take the photo, but the expectations of the model (and the photographer himself) are high. In a big city, the lighting situation can change due to the incidence of sunlight or the lighting. All of a sudden, backgrounds are blocked by trucks or crowds of people suddenly cross the intersection. A photographer like this has to be able to filter the noise of the stress of the big city and still deliver without the model feeling uncomfortable or the effort suddenly becoming too great.

Let us - in this thread - collect advices of how to do this awesome kind of photography. I will explain how I do it in my next post.

Please be aware that whenever you post a portrait photo of anyone to be allowed to post it in Social Media before...

Yes, it's not a myth, it happens. And it's guaranteed to happen to every street portrait photographer: rejection from the potential street model.

It happened, it happens and it will happen again and again. You approach the person in question and they more or less clearly refuse to be photographed. Sometimes this can only happen during the conversation, sometimes it's just a wave off when the person senses that they are being approached.

However, anyone who has received a “no” quickly realizes that it's not the end of the world. In fact, I often felt that I had lost my fear of rejection as a result. Because the successes didn't help me that much at first, as the flight altitude got higher and higher and so did the fall altitude. This can be particularly extreme if she has changed the time of day or the location, so that everything suddenly changes.

Tip: But honestly, rejection really hurts at first and self-doubt grows exponentially. If you have been rejected on all 10 approaches at the beginning, you should stop for the day and start again another time.

If you stand at the side of the road for hours and think about who to approach, when and where, you are overthinking. And then it's less and less likely to work. What works well for me: Arrive and then give yourself 10, or even better 5 minutes to speak to someone for the first time. Once the 10 minutes have passed, don't give yourself much tolerance, but go home and try again tomorrow!
