Hello,

Last time I got extremely helpful advice on disassembly on my Leica I and after the first (pretty successful) film roll I realized that my distance guessing skills are not as amazing as I thought (who would have thought) and got a somewhat tired FODIS locally.

I need to DIY repair two things:

  • Replace the glass in one of front glass covers which is cracked (see the picture)
  • Replace the mirror (already sourced a replacement from nobbysparrow)

I've got however a few questions where I'm looking for support before I do something wrong:

  1. Do both front caps screw out? Is the thread standard, ie. I can loosen them counterclockwise?
  2. Is there any trick to get them loose? A drop of oil or maybe they're also glued and a drop of thinner would rather help?
  3. I'm assuming that also the end caps (the big ones) are screwed in?
  4. Is there any trick to get the old mirror out?
  5. Is there a recommended way to glue the new mirror in?

Thanks a lot for your help, happy to report back my progress (once it happens)!

for unscrewing window you might need clamp tool in appropriate size
For replacing beam splitter - unsrew the round cap, pull out the spring, beam splitter will fall out. When inserting replacement put the reflecting surface towards eyepiece, possibly you will avoid to correct horizontal adjustement
