I just received my M11-D and this is my first black M camera with the new black coating on aluminum, which feels different to the touch than the black coated brass of my M10-M. I use gaffers tape above the lugs to prevent shine on the case with the Monochrom and I was wondering how the M11 finish wears and if I should do the same for the M10-D?

Thanks

Erik

I think the new black paint is great. It has much more grip than the previous surfaces, so it's easier to handle the camera. And it's the most resistant colour I know (not just on M cameras, but ever). We probably don't need to worry about durability, it comes from the military sector.

The strap on my M11 has leather protectors.  Either the protectors work, the paint is very strong, or some combination of the two.  No marks after 18 months of use. I am assuming the D has the same finish.

The black of the M11 is fantastic. I have the camera in daily carry since it camera out. much more durable than the M10 finish.

The only signs of wear are on the ISO dial and on-off switch, and they are made of brass.

Gaffer tape is a bad idea, it turns bad when drying out.

That said I use the 3M mounting tape for the thumbie, and I had to remove it once to send in the camera for inspection, and the surface is clean with no signs.
