Advertisement (gone after registration)

I have front row floor seats for Cirque Du Soleil tomorrow night...Photography is permitted. I intend to take the M11-P...What lens??? I expect to take one lens, choices range from 16mm WATE all the way up to an older Canon LTM 135.

 

Recommendations??

My advice: These photos will never be as interesting as watching a Cirque show start to finish uninterrupted and actually enjoying it without worries and woes about photography.
I have never taken a camera to Cirque shows and have seen many - mostly in Vegas.

This is probably the 10th Cirque show for us... we love them.  I've shot at a show before but this time I'm very close.  I don't intend to spend the whole show shooting, but given the opportunity I'll take some pics, that's for sure.  Can't bring a "camera bag" in the venue so I want to do one lens...

So to wrap up this thread, I called ahead...can I bring a camera???  "Absolutely" I was told. No camera bag, no "professional" photography.  Easy!  When I got to the venue there were signs that said "No Photography other than cell phone without flash".  I got through  but was stopped actually getting to my seat by someone who insisted that I stuff the camera in my wife's purse and leave it there.......... I enjoyed the show. Lady sitting next to me videod the ENTIRE SHOW on her phone...

In an era when most people carry phones that can take pics, I used to wonder how the Egyptian authorities could maintain their ban on photography inside the pyramids, and in the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Apparently the rule now is that cameras are forbidden, but taking pics with your phone is permitted.

All done and dusted now, but.......

As someone who does stage photography, but has never see the CdS, I would take as long a lens as possible. Down in the audience one would not be in a suitable place for a well composed shot of a scene or even a smaller grouping - the angle and perspective would be all wrong. The best opportunities would be close ups: either of one/two person acrobatic action, or the face of someone who has come close above you on the stage - hence the long lens.

How I would have answered…

35 as always. And even more with the resolution of the M11.

28 or lower if you intend to capture the „whole“ atmosphere. 50 or 75 when you want to get a more specific capture of things you love about the CdS.

I guess 90 and 135 could get inconvenient if you want a correct framed shot but also enjoy the show at the same time - even with EVF. …IMHO. 😎
