With all the new SL Tele Photo Zooms one has to go back and the a look at the 24-90.  Heavier, variable aperture 2.8-4  which surprisingly starts shrinking at the wide angle side already (35ish)  But...Leica through and through images that are maybe as perfect as the 24-70 or the 70-200....maybe less? I don't know.

I got the 24-70 and loved it but my FOMO (I am new to the SL system) led me to exchange it for a 24-90.  I am still looking into the 24-70 with some wonder.

Anyway, I could not find a thread for images on this lens so I'm starting one.  First off just a quick shot at 24 f2.8 and then 90 4. (wide open respectively) just to see the rendering.

And a little bit of an experiment.  I started a series of off-frame tracking images a few months ago.  Using the M11 and mainly an 18mm, 21 and 35.  But yesterday I took the 24-90 to see how it would behave.

Taken at (90mm, F22, 1/20th sec) ISO 64.  (Quite a sunny day)

Well ... Much has been written about this lens over the years. Yes, it is big. Yes, it is heavy. Yes, the lens hood is clumsy. For me, it is the swiss army knife of lenses and I really do not need to look at any more photos from anyone to explain why I keep it 😀

S Maclean,   Should you wish to compare photographs taken with the two lenses you might check out these two links.  My choice is the SL 24-90.   r/ Mark

In the motorcycle images, I find the out of focus highlights to be distracting. Would the 24-70 render any better?

I think either lens would render those differently if the photographer pays attention to it either at the time of shooting or the time of processing

inhave seen those and I agree based on the images. I just wanted to bring the theme to the forum.

i do think the 24-90 is more unique and special. The 24-70 being more practical.

For me, it's a matter of FL range,  24-70 vs 24-90, off-set by the constant 2.8 aperture on the 24-70, smaller weight and size.  IQ is excellent for both the 24-70 and 24-90, and I won't debate any IQ difference in favor of one or the other.  Either way, it's more about my shooting and the light than the particular lens.  I stay with the 24-70 and have the Vario-elmarit 70-200 f2.8 for longer FLs.

63 images!!! Out of curiosity: May I ask why/which effect you were looking for.

Ha!

I started making one picture and noticed that the dynamic range was too large. Accordingly I started to make hdr recordings and having only the 24-90 and no filters with me I stitched the stacked photos into one panorama as seen above as I wanted to record the expanse of vineyards as seen in reality.
I was pleased to notice that LR could do it and my Mac did it also quite fast.

No doubt the 24-70 and the 24-90 are superb lenses, with the 24-90 a little ahead optically. One issue with the 24-70 is that it sucks in dust. I don`t know if this has been corrected in late production, but Leica will clean on warranty.

Have just got the 24-90 (after poring over this and other threads).  My first pic on getting it home…
