Amado, just keep practicing. I found the people of India warm and delightful. Of the hundreds of approaches I made, I was waved off maybe four times. Then on two occasions I ended up paying about the equivalent of .10 cents US.

Hi, William - I just enjoyed looking at all of your people photos from India. They are wonderful!! I'm leaving for India at the end of January for 5 weeks. I'd love any suggestions for "don't miss" photo opportunities. I'm taking an M8 with lenses from 12mm to 90mm and a Canon 5D with probably the 85/1.2 and Leica R100 Macro. Would you suggest anything else? Did you have any problem traveling through airports with batteries? I read that Indian airlines will sometimes take your batteries away. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Tina,

Welcome to the Forum! Thank you. I just had a chance to take a look at your galleries and see that we have a similar style with regards to shooting. I really enjoyed my first glance and will take some time to review them later. I can't wait to go back to Morocco some day. Which cities will you be traveling in India?

With the M8, I brought a 28, 35 and 50. Since I was using primes with the M8, I used mainly my 70-200 with my Canon Mark III. Are you traveling alone? My suggestion is not to be in a group while shooting. I loved Hardiwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi.

In Delhi, I spent all my time in the old city. Take a taxi to the Red Fort, explore there and then take a pedi-rickshaw from there into the Chandni Chowk. Make sure that your driver speaks excellent English and negotiate the price for an hourly basis. I payed less than $10 US for about three hours and even at that price I was told I was ripped off. You can explore there for hours. As you get deeper into that area, it's like you have entered a completely different world. I didn't see another white person the whole time and stuck out like a sore thumb and the people couldn't be more friendly. Show your subjects their images and you find that even the most stern people go nuts in a friendly way.

On the way back to the Fort have the driver drop you off at the Jami Masjid (the largest mosque in all of India). Most of the area is outdoor like a large Italian piazza. Go somewhere around 1PM. i posted two images from this area in the people section and one of our members wrote that he wished he had these sorts of opportunities when he was there. The day I was there had nothing but photo ops. But i travelled alone and had a guide by my side. Unfortunately for me it was my first morning shooting and was just getting my India legs on after getting 4 hours of sleep after about 30 hours of traveling. I was planning on returning there on my way out, but a family emergency forced me back home early.

I had no problems with the Indian airlines. The only time I was stopped was in Frankfurt and I think they were a couple of photographers who wanted to see what was in the bag. All they would ask was how much did this cost?

Do you have your itinerary in India? If not (or if so), I can introduce you to a travel group in Delhi who will take care of everything (Private car and driver, guides, hotels, airlines, airport pickups at 3AM!) at a very low price. And they give you their mobile numbers so you can call them immediately if problems arise. A friend of mine is a big CEO here in the states and travels there quite a bit and uses their services exclusively. He introduced me.

Finally, Delhi airport is under construction and at 2AM any day is like most major airports in the US the evening before Thanksgiving. So get there early on departure! I hope this helps and don't hesitate to e-mail me through my website or through the PM service here. Cheers!
