ashree Posted August 25, 2024 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2024 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone...I have an SL2 and M11-P and I was wondering if anyone has experience with outdoor hiking in Hawaii (Honolulu) in Sept? This will be my first time in Hawaii! Should I be safe and bring the SL2 with 35mm-SL / 50mm Summilux-SL combo or the M11 and 35mm-APO-M /90mm Leica-M lenses? I don't want to bring both and the former has me thinking twice because of how heavy the 50mm Summilux-SL in combination with my 35mm Summicron-SL lens. I would be hiking a few miles a day and bringing to the beach my would-be SL2 or M11-P for sunrise photos. I know my back says M11-P because it will probably thank me later but I don't know, I really like the way the 50mm Summilux-SL renders (I think this decision would be much easier if I actually owned a 50mm 0.95 Noctilux for my M11-P). Oh and I'll also be carrying a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 for video so I would not be shooting any video on the SL2 / so that point is moot! So if anyone has a great experience bringing the SL2 to Hawaii I would be interested to know (as I am leaning more to this unless I'm convinced otherwise), thanks! Advertisement Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 Hi ashree, Take a look here Anyone with experience shooting either M11 or SL2 (or both) outdoor hiking Hawaii?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
beewee Posted August 25, 2024 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2024 If I had to pick between the options you listed, I’d go with M kit for compactness. For landscape and documentary style shots, I’m usually zone focusing at f/5.6-f/8 and having shot M systems for a good 10 years, MF vs AF makes no difference to me but it depends how comfortable you are with manual focus. I have both SL and M systems. For myself, I’d probably go with SL3 + 24-90 and call it done so I don’t have to switch lenses.
Photoworks Posted August 26, 2024 Share #3 Posted August 26, 2024 I went a few years ago, and I took the SL2 with 24-90 and the M10-R with 21, 35, 50,90 I used them all. https://photos.alexkroke.com/Travel/Hawaii-2021/n-mPvspW Welcome, dear visitor! lightsourcekauai Posted August 26, 2024 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2024 Aloha. I live on Kauai. I have SL2 and SL3 along with Q2 Reporter. The reason I do not have an M is because of the weather. If you are hiking in the mountains in the islands you will often hike through rain showers. Another thing to consider is the physical exertion while hiking in the heat and humidity. If you are anything like me, you will sweat. Not sure if you want to drip all over your M every time you stop to take a photo. Also, if photographing at the beach in September there may be a large swell as September is the beginning of the winter surf season. The large waves will send salt and ocean spray through the air, or if you are photographing close to the breaking surf the waves may splash onto your camera. Please, Do Not leave your cameras or lenses in your car ever. Take them with you every time you get out. Even if it’s just to stop and look, you’ll be surprised how many times a quick pullover ends up being a 15 minute walk down to a beach below or a waterfall above. Even 5 minutes is more than enough time for a terrible person to smash and grab. Have fun. Aloha, Lee
