phovsho Posted December 11, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all I'm contemplating returing to my film cameras. I've a couple of M6s, M7 and MP (along with an M8 sssh!). I was wondering: 1. what are the differences between the MP and the MP 3? I'm thinking I might sell the M6s and M7..., and pick up another MP based body - just love the quality feel. What price should I have to pay for an MP or MP 3? 2. which are the sweet film lens? In the M8 space there are a lot of positive things said about the 24/2.8A and the 50/1.4A. Personally, I find 35mm, 50mm and 75 mm to be the focal lenght sweet spot for me (in that order of preference) when shooting film. I have a 35/1.4A, but hear lots of good things about the 35/2.0 (A?) on film forums - many suggesting it is a better and smaller lens than the 1.4A. I'm going to go out and buy some film! Advertisement Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Hi phovsho, Take a look here MPs and MP 3s. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ddp Posted December 11, 2007 Share #2 Posted December 11, 2007 The MP3 has frame sets for 35, 50 and 90 only. Design is based on the original mid 1950's MP . External frame counter like the M2, and frames around the viewfinder window. The eyelets are also different. IMHO....it is one of the better special edition M bodies out there. If you can find one, and can live with the frame sets - grab it. And use it. It has become my main M camera since I snagged one. As far as lenses go - depends on your shooting style of course. If you've got a 35/1.4 asph, I wouldn't go for the Summicron. That's my own opinion. I love the look of the Noctilux on film, but that lens doesn't suit everyone's taste or style. phovsho Posted December 12, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted December 12, 2007 Thanks for that. I have an idea where to get an MP 3. I have a Noctilux, and have always loved it thought found it didn't translate so well on m8
thomasw_ Posted December 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted December 12, 2007 to see differences in film rendering between the lenses, check out the m-mount group on flickr. hope that helps. also, your film/developer selection should be considered based on what look you desire. phovsho Posted December 12, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted December 12, 2007 Thanks Thomas - helpful link. It is interesting how a number of my lens have been out of favour on the M8, such as my Noctilux, but which the prospect of film gets me all excited about again. I might call on you advice in future regarding developing etc. Cheers Murray
peter_n Posted December 13, 2007 Share #6 Posted December 13, 2007 Murray I picked up a used MP3 on Saturday from a dealer here in Boston. This particular body is quite scratched on the back and it's price reflected that. It was in a box with the Leicavit, lens was kept by the owner. When I sell the Leicavit I'm hoping that the price I paid will be around US$200 more than the current average price on eBay. An MP sold on eBay for US$1800 a couple of weeks ago, the current prices seem to be approximating US$2300 ±US$100. Seems like an excellent camera.
