APO-SUMMICRON-M 1:2/50 ASPH - What is the purpose of these screws?

I really would appreciate some advice and guidance in connection with my APO-SUMMICRON-M 1:2/50 ASPH lens. Set in the area between the aperture adjustment ring and the extended built in hood are two screws. I have just noticed that one of the screws is missing and wonder, what is the purpose of these screws? Is it safe to use the lens minus one of the screws and finally, does anyone know where I could obtain a replacement screw. Thankyou in anticipation.

The video shows that the screws on both sides are the same and are used to secure the built-in hood to the lens body.

So, my thinking is that if you can find the same screws to fix it, that would be great. If not, just use the built-in hood gently. For your reference.

In the video, you can see the screw specifications (M1.6x3). You might be able to purchase them from Leica.

Hello Evan,

Many thanks for your highly detailed response and the YouTube link. Greatly appreciated and from what you have confirmed and towards which I now recognise, the missing screw is not a serious issue. The built in hood will be treated as you suggest until such time as a replacement screw is sourced.

I can see the eBay ad already.

Near Mint, slight wear on focus ring and barrel but normal for a lens of this age.

Natural although admittedly hard wear to a lens that I have used for work purposes in over 20 countries and predominantly, the MENA region. At times harsh environments and at times, challenging industrial projects with no sandpaper employed here and instead, honest on site wear and tear. The lens has never been dropped, has never experienced a particularly hard impact and has never let me down. Now admittedly not the prettiest of lenses, however an old friend and still producing in my opinion superlative images, although as expected of course for the most wonderful 50 produced by Leica.

Perhaps you can, however I cannot. I never buy a Leica lens or indeed anything else Leica as a pecuniary investment and all have to earn their keep. A Golden Rule for myself is that I never sell a Leica lens. Never. A body yes or perhaps, although never a lens.

I was only making a joke, I meant nothing by it. I actually love the fact it get so much use. Babying camera gear was a reason that years ago I didnt get the images I wanted.

I knew that it was a joke and I laughed when I read your response. Perhaps I am becoming neurotic in my dotage, however I remember many years ago working at a ship building facility within the People’s Republic of China. On the second day of visit, the embarrassment of realising that no person at the yard understood so called tongue in cheek English humour. No concept of sarcasm, rhetoric or self deprecation and instead, everything said was taken literally. Literally for goodness sake! That is why I childishly adopted a stuffed shirt posture, just in case. Many thanks though for chipping in here and raising a laugh, which is appreciated.

I am glad to hear. Having just bought one myself I will too not be afraid to use and abuse it
